Memories of Mom on Her Birthday
Memories of My Mom on Her Birthday
January 25, 1921 – January 15, 2000
Today my mom is celebrating her 95th birthday with a party in heaven. It doesn’t seem like she has been gone for 16 years. I have so many wonderful memories of my mom. She was sweet, kind and caring to everyone she met, no one was a stranger. Mom was an excellent cake baker and decorator. The cakes she made from birthdays, showers, graduations, anniversaries and weddings were so delicious. She had a few secret ingredients that she would add for that specisl flavor and perfect shape . I remember one time she had made sheet cakes and cut them in little squares to decorate for a party. Mom would lay the pans of cake on the bed to cool and on this particular day the door wasn’t closed and our Great Dane decided he wanted to check them out. He ate every piece of cake!!! Mom was easy going and after the shock of seeing her cakes gone, she just went to the kitchen and made another batch! Of course mom made my beautiful wedding cake and the dog didn’t get that! LOL
Mom loved to sing, she was always singing while she worked around the house and also in the church choir. I remember one Christmas, I think I was about ten years old and my sister was thirteen, we sang ‘Oh Holy Night’ at our Christmas church service with my mom.
I remember the beautiful flower gardens we had, mom loved flowers. We had beautiful lilac bushes and peonies lined along the driveway.
The side yard was where she had iris, lily of the valley, bleeding hearts and tulips. She loved all kinds of flowers and when she passed away, we made a memorial garden in our back yard and planted a few of the flowers we received from her funeral.
This azalea bush was only about a foot high and now it’s huge! I was even able to find a bleeding heart plant which reminds me of those we had when I was young.
Sixteen years ago, this holly bush was less than two feet high, now it’s up to the second story window! It looks so pretty in the winter with the bright red berries.
Mom’s favorite bird was a cardinal and every time one visits us in the yard I remember the love mom had for them. When this cardinal came to visit, he stopped right in front of mom’s garden. When I see a cardinal, I think of my mom and know she is watching over us.
Mom passed away January 15, 2000, ten days before her birthday. The one thing mom know was how much my hubby loved snow. Living in South Carolina, we hardly see any, but on her first birthday in heaven, it snowed! Hubby was out building a snowman at our shop before we went on appointments and we’ve always said mom sent us the snow for her birthday.
Every time I see a penny on the ground, I pick it up and look to the heavens, knowing it was from mom. Today as I ran into the store, as I was getting out of the car, I found 60 cents right as I stepped out. Mom most have known the cost of living has gone up! LOL These are just some of the many wonderful memories that I hold forever in my heart and smile when I think of them.
Thinking of you always mom and love and miss you. Have a heavenly Happy Birthday!
My mom has also been gone 16 years. It doesn’t seem that long and yet, it seems like forever. I love my own memories of my mother and loved reading yours.
I feel the same way Carol, but with so many wonderful memories, mom will always be with me, if only in my heart. Thanks for visiting and keep your memories going.
