Memories of Marty

Memories of Marty

May 15, 2002 – August 6, 2018

We lost our beloved toy poodle at 16 years old and have so many memories of Marty that will live forever in our hearts.

Back in the fall of 2002, Marty became a member of our family when he was about 5 months old.  He was destined to be but down by the breeder because his legs were a bit longer than what “fit the requirements” of show dog quality.  When hubby saw him way in the back of his pen, he bent down, and started talking with the pup. He slowly came up towards the front of the pen, hubby picked him up and as he snuggled on Rich’s shoulder, we realized we were going home with a toy poodle puppy.

For about the first 8 months, Marty became a great friend to our 16-year-old Sheltie until she passed away in the spring of 2003.  Shellie was partially blind and had arthritis so she didn’t have a lot of energy however to our amazement it didn’t take long for her to realize the pup wasn’t going to leave her alone until she got up and went outside with Marty.  For the next 8 months or so, the two were inseparable, Marty snuggled up against Shellie for naps and bedtime and Marty would find a way to perk her up and the two were best pals if only for a short time.

When our then 6-year-old granddaughter met Marty for the first time, she claimed him to be hers.  She loved to dress him up and read him stories or just snuggle with him.  Marty would sit on Alexandra’s lap and take it all in.  He would go to work with us at times and he loved going on road trips when visiting the grands after they moved from South Carolina to Indiana.

I remember the first trip up, our younger granddaughter, Trinity was so excited because we brought “her puppy” with us.  On another trip to visit the grands, Trinity was learning to sew and was making all kinds of items from fleece.  She made Marty a little fleece blanket, Marty was so comfy covered with his new blanket.

Trinity was so excited to see Marty on her 10th birthday and no matter how long it was until Marty saw them, he was always excited and never forgot Alexandra or Trinity.
A few years ago Marty lost his hearing, was partially blind and had problems walking but still managed to get upstairs every night to crawl into his nighttime bed. During the day, he would sleep on his fuzzy rug waiting for us to get home from work.  There were times he was in such a deep sleep, he wouldn’t even hear us come in the house and when I called him, he couldn’t hear me anyways.  This past year Marty’s health was failing but at 16 years old, he still knew his way to the back door to go outside, from his rug downstairs, to his food in the kitchen and upstairs at night.

But on Monday, August 6th, Marty’s fight was over.  After work we put him outside like we always do, he came back in, ate his food and went upstairs for a nap.  After our granddaughter left from visiting for the afternoon, we went upstairs to find Marty sleeping in his bed.  He looked so peaceful as he always did when sleeping but it didn’t take long to realize he would not be waking up, Marty went peacefully to Rainbow Bridge. That’s the same way that Shellie went so I’d like to think Shellie and Marty are together once again.

A week earlier I was looking at clouds and I saw one in the shape of a puppy with wings. I wrote a blog asking if anyone else saw the “Angel Pup” and while some can’t see things in clouds, others did.  I’m taking the Angel Pup cloud that I saw as a message from Shellie letting Marty know he will happy and no more pain when he gets to heaven.

So many memories of Marty from being a scared little pup ready to be put down to a loving dog for us and our grandchildren.  Marty was a member of our family, he was spoiled, loved and will always live forever in our hearts.  Rest in Peace sweet Marty, you will never be forgotten.

 Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Yes they do Roy and our dogs become like our children. We have so many great memories of Marty with the grands and I’m so glad he went peacefully in his sleep, that makes it a bit easier for us. Thanks for the kind comments.

Beautiful narrative. Marty was a very loved and very blessed part of your family. God made dogs to be man’s best friend and it is an honor that you got to share the life of that special and beautiful pet. I also saw that cloud formation that day and interpreted it the same way— a dog with wings!

Thanks Jean, I’m so glad we went to visit the breeder the day we did, otherwise, Marty wouldn’t have had 16 great years. He was so loved by us and our grandchildren, a member of the family for sure. Wasn’t that cloud awesome?? I think it was a sign that we didn’t realize right away. But Marty is now running free with the other Angel fur babies. Thanks for visiting.
