Married Seven Times
I can’t remember what I did today last week but I can remember what I did 52 years ago today! It’s a day that I will never forget, the day I married my sweetheart. This is my story on how it all began but when I wrote my story I didn’t know I would be married seven times. http://themarthareview.com/true-love-is-forever-strong
We were married in a beautiful old church in Schenectady New York, St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church on July 29, 1967. My grandmother and I made my wedding gown and the bridal party gowns.
We raised two daughters and in 1987 are oldest got married in a gown I designed and made for her. Five years later on July 29, 1992 I got married again. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and hubby and I renewed our vows in a full ceremony. For this wedding, I wore the gown I made for my daughter’s wedding!
We enjoyed getting married so much we made it a tradition to renew our vows after 5 years after our 25th anniversary. So our next four weddings were in 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012. Three were after we moved to South Carolina but our 2007 anniversary we were visiting in New York so went back to St. Anthony’s where our fun began.
So six weddings down and the 7th was our 50th wedding anniversary. On July 29, 2017 we went back to our beautiful home church of St. Anthony’s once again to get married. This picture was taken in the same place as our wedding picture! The items I carried made it feel like my mom and dad were with us just like they were 50 years ago. I carried my mom’s silk hankie, my dad’s bible he carried with him through World War 2, my mother-in-law’s rosary from Italy and a penny I found on the ground when we arrived in Schenectady. This is a blog I wrote about our 50th anniversary. http://themarthareview.com/beautiful-50th-wedding-anniversary-ceremony/
When Mass was over I mentioned to the priest that we would be back in 25 years for our 75th anniversary, hubby will be 95 years old and I’ll be 93. We should be able to make the 1000 mile trip without a problem.
I had a surprise on Christmas day 2017. My sister stopped over to celebrate Christmas with the family and she handed me a package. You can’t imagine my excitement when I saw it was the Anniversary plate that my mom and dad received on their 50th anniversary in 1992! http://themarthareview.com/a-beautiful-plate/
Every year I put my wedding gown on and while it’s a bit snug here and there, it’s still a very special feeling when I walk down the stairs to show my sweetie. I wonder how many other couples can say they were married 7 times to the same sweetheart.
congratulations, Martha! that’s a milestone! you are blessed with a wonderful husband.
Thanks Bing, 3 more years until we get “married” again!
What a wonderful story, Martha!! You were a beautiful bride each time, and you both looked so happy in each picture. I love that you wore the same dress each time.
Thanks Jeanine, I think our entire wedding including the bridal party gowns and mine, the flowers, cake and reception cost about $200! My mom made our wedding cake and her and I made the bouquets and we had a beautiful back yard reception. Goes to show you don’t need to spend thousands on a wedding to be happy. Thanks for visiting!
Mazal tov!
Thanks Roy, 3 more years until our 8th wedding!
Wow, that’s a beautiful story….and I can safely say- TRUE LOVE! As I hold back the tears on the wedding day stories! Thank you for sharing…..LOVE your images too! The younger image of your husband made me think of Al Pacino for some reason- has he ever gotten that before?
Thanks Pamela, yes it was true love when we first met and we are still on our honeymoon! No one has mentioned about Al Pacino but there’s always a first! Thanks for visiting!
I enjoyed reading your post! I enjoyed your pictures too.
Thanks Amanda, in 3 more years, we’ll be on our 8th wedding!
Martha, you inspire me! Thank you so much for this post – we’ve just celebrated 35 years together as husband and wife, so we’re “babies” compared to you and your hubby! It’s so important that couples realize it IS possible to remain married and look to the future of that marriage with hope!
Congratulations on 35 years Lori! It’s kinda funny, when we met on a blind date people said we were too young and it would never last, when we were married they said the same thing. I guess we showed them what true love is! Continue making memories and watching your anniversaries add up!
What a great story (you had me fooled by the Title, good work!!) and tradition you have created to celebrate your Love and Relationship! Bravo!
I like using catchy titles Jyll! Three more years and we will have our 8th wedding!
WOW. Thank you for sharing your journey.
It’s beautiful 💜
It’s been an ongoing honeymoon Simone. Thanks for visiting.
I love the idea of vow renewals – we have been talking about doing something to mark every 10 years for us… This year we’re celebrating 7 years, so we’re on our way to the first one! Your gowns are so beautiful!
It’s something that we look forward to Britt, especially since we had our 2nd wedding on our 25th anniversary. You will have your 2nd wedding when we have our 8th in three years! Be sure to keep me updated!
