List of 10 Things to Substitute This for That

Have you ever started a baking or cooking project only to find you don’t have the right ingredients? It’s frustrating when your taste buds are calling for something in the recipe that you don’t have! This is a list of 10 things to substitute this for that.

Buttermilk – For 1 cup use 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar, fill to 1 cup mark with whole milk. Also 3/4 cup yogurt or sour cream to 1/4 cup water works.

This is delicious lemon zucchini bread Lia and I made substituting yogurt for the buttermilk. http://themarthareview.com/lias-lemon-zucchini-bread/

Baking Chocolate – For 1 oz. use tablespoons cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Eggs – 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce (muffins, brownies) OR 1 teaspoon baking soda & 1 tablespoon vinegar (cakes, brownies) OR 1/4 cup mashed banana (muffins)

These Chocolate Tea cakes don’t call for eggs, instead they use baking soda and vinegar. It’s a great recipe if you are allergic to eggs plus it’s delicious! http://themarthareview.com/dessert-day/

Milk – Heavy cream thinned with water until right consistency.

Brown Sugar – 1 cup white sugar and 1 tablespoon molasses. Stir together before using in a recipe.

Baking Powder – For 1 teaspoon use 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 cup of plain yogurt. Reduce the liquid depending on how much yogurt is added. OR 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar.

Potatoes – Mashed or riced cauliflower (not only delicious but healthy)

These may look like mashed potatoes but they aren’t! It’s delicious mashed cauliflower or better known as faux mashed potatoes! http://themarthareview.com/faux-mashed-potatoes/

Vinegar – For 1/4 cup vinegar use 1/3 cup lemon juice

Bread crumbs – crushed cornflakes, potato chips crackers, toasted bread

Lime juice – For 1 teaspoon use same amount of vinegar OR white wine OR lemon juice

I hope my List of 10 Things to Substitute This for That has given you some helpful tips when baking. Do you have any other baking substitutes that you use when you are out of an ingredient it calls for?

If your looking for a list of 10 healthy snacks, this is a blog I wrote last year. It even has healthy almond joy bars and chocolate cookies! And you thought healthy had to be boring! http://themarthareview.com/list-of-10-healthy-snacks/

  1. How helpful! Now I know where to look instead of using Google. Thanks for sharing. (You know Lia is going to have her own show on the Food Network one day, right?)

Hope they help you out Angie. I think I may add a part 2 someday! Lia loves baking and others have said the same thing about having her own show Angie. LOL

  2. Hi Martha! Great ideas, I have one for you. Rather than Corn Starch use Arrowroot Powder. It doesn’t affect your blood sugar / glycemic index and works just as well or better! I also like to use applesauce for oil in muffins, cake etc.

Your recipe looked yummy! As always Lia look so sweet!

  3. That is a great list! And I do know what you mean when a recipe calls for something and you have everything but that one thing. So frustrating! I just read that you can make bread with self-rising flour and plain Greek yogurt. That amazes me. Plus, I have read lots of ways to use Greek yogurt in place of things. I suppose I should just always have some on hand.

Martha, you could be my new Mrs. Google. You’re handy to have around in the kitchen. Lia’s getting cuter every day.

    • Martha says:

I like that Lily, Mrs. Google. LOL These substitutes are also money saving because instead of getting a quart of milk when needing a cup saves those dollars.

  5. Martha, brilliant! I’ve done some substituting on the fly, but I’ve never seen a list or made a list before. Thanks!

    • Martha says:

Thanks Kebba, I learned some of these from my grandmother. It never fails when I get ready to bake something I’m missing an ingredient. Hope the list is helpful for you.

Flax seeds and water are another egg substitute …
I just discovers chef jana’s YouTube channel – she has some great clips on making vegan cheese … and a meat like ingredient from banana peels!! Used for over 1000 years in Brazil, the recipe I tried was surprisingly tasty!

    • Martha says:

Banana peels?? Thanks for the flax seeds and water substitute, I’ll let me granddaughter know about that one. Her 3 year old is allergic to eggs. I’ll have to visit Chef Jana’s and check out the banana peels.

Thank you for sharing this list with us which Charlie and I can use inside our Homeschool Cooking Class. But we might need Lia help because she is a Expert Baker while Charlie is better on our Grill.
