Lia’s Reflection Garden
With the coronavirus stay at home order in place people have had to make changes in their routines. As for my hubby and me we leave our house every day and go in the backyard! A few weeks ago Rich cleaned out a corner of our yard that had become unsightly with weeds. After seeing the great job he did, I mentioned we should turn it into another garden. We’re calling this Lia’s Reflection Garden.
After clearing the corner of overgrown weeds, Rich rototilled the soil and leveled it off. The next thing we had to do was find something to put in our new garden.
Walking around the yard we found our Nandina bush (also called Heavenly Bamboo) had become hidden by our oversized Holly tree so we transplanted that to our new garden. In the fall and winter this bush has beautiful red berries. We did the same to a rose bush, planting that in front of our Nandina. Of course the finishing touch was when Rich added an Angel statue to the garden.
Little by little we transformed the corner with our brass watering pole that we don’t use and our windmill from another part of the yard. I placed a pickup order for a few perennial flowers and hope they will spread like one we got last year for mom’s memory garden.
A few months back I received some solar lights to review and I never knew where to hang them permanently until now They shine on the garden at night and is such a beautiful sight as I can see the garden from our family room.
Our new garden is shaping up and what a difference from a corner of weeds to seeing beauty. It just so happened another review item arrived and it was a small garden fountain with interchangeable nozzles for the water flow. What perfect timing and it looks great in the garden!
Of course Lia has to check out the flow of the water to match sure everything is in working order! Yes she says it’s perfect and even her butterfly loves it.
But that’s not all Lia did, she showed her mommy and daddy how the fountain turns on and off!
I love all the work Rich did but we still aren’t finished. As we “find” things we will add them. I have a wishlist and I posted it to my friends on Facebook to be on the lookout. I was looking for an old garden bench, some rocks to border the garden and some scraps of aluminum.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” We were dropping things off at the recycling center the other day when a man was pulling two benches out of his truck I asked if I could have one so instead of tossing it, we saved a little piece of landfill! The bench needed a face lift so Lia jumped in and helped Papa with that job.
After painting the back and bench seat white we moved the bench to the garden area. The white looks so fresh so Rich painted the rest of the bench today. I think Lia wants to add some pink to the bench so next time she’s over we’ll ask for your advice on that.
While Rich was in the shed he found a partial bag of red mulch and it didn’t take long for Lia to help him spread that around the flowers. She is such a great little helper.
One last addition yesterday was when Rich came up with the idea to put the pots of last year’s mums along the back edge of the garden. Lia carried the large flower pots over all by herself and neatly arranged them along the fence. When they start blooming it will look even more beautiful.
I’m still searching for a rock border but I’m sure we can find some soon. You’re probably wondering what I’m going to do with aluminum. I came up with the idea to cut out a sun, moon and some stars to attach to the fence. When the sun or the solar lights hit them they will reflect the beams and shine. Lia and papa put so much love in this little garden and she was so excited to unveil her garden to mommy and daddy yesterday. Lia’s Reflection Garden is just a little piece of heaven where we can sit and reflect.
We have my mom’s Memory garden on the other end of our yard and now Lia’s Reflection garden finishing off the other end. We will continue to work on the finishing touches and by July challenge hope to have everything in place!
From the look on Lia’s face I’d say she is very proud of our little garden!
Lovely job! Michigan finally had its restrictions lifted so stores can sell plants and gardening supplies again. Looking forward to adding some color to a fenced garden corner in our backyard soon.
Thanks Kat, I love a challenge of any kind and this garden was just that by finding things that needed transplanting. The bench was the best find! Would love to see your garden!
What a beautiful garden, Martha. You got Lia, saying butterfly. Too cute! She likes that fountain.
Thanks Brenda! It was so cute when Lia called them “fyy-fyys” but she grew up overnight and now they are butterflies.
Adorable!
Lia worked hard on the garden Alexandra!

It’s amazing how a little garden can bring so much peace Vidya. We will be adding things as they are found! Looking forward to see pics of your garden.
Love love loved Lia’s garden. Its the best thing I saw this month.Just beautiful
Thank you Dr.Amrita. I smile when I see the garden and I smile when I see Lia. She brings so much happiness and the garden will too.
I too have an area of the yard that needs help. I like the idea of turning it into a flower garden. I hope Lia enjoys her new area for years to come.
When we started the garden I really didn’t have a plan as to what would go in it Rani. We just added things and Lia had such a fun time helping, she will continue to add love to her garden.
I especially love the lights at night. They are such a great touch – and the teamwork with little Lia is naturally a highlight, too. 🙂
Lia was so proud of every step she did Julie. The best highlight was when we added the fountain and she figured out how to turn it on and off immediately. The lights are one of my favorite additions also.
It’s so beautiful, Martha!! And it was wonderful to watch Lia check it out and enjoy it. Those videos are just precious.
Thanks Jeanine, Lia is the best little helper. I’m glad you like it.
Wow, it is very lovely. Now, I want a Nandina bush . I love the name Heavenly bamboo. Your little garden is an inspiration to me. This is really the first year, I have had a yard to have a garden. I will have to see what happens. Thank-you for this amazing post. Much love and God bless.
We had no plans for a garden but when Rich started cleaning out the corner I mentioned it would be a nice place for a garden. The rest is history. The bench was my exciting find!
What a cute garden. 🙂
Thanks, Lia loves the outdoors and helping build her garden. Thanks for visiting Amanda.
