Laws We Shouldn’t Need

This blog is about my thoughts and opinions. There are laws we shouldn’t need, instead they should be common sense in my opinion. Here are a few and why I think this way.

Wearing seatbelts can possibly save the person’s life who has one on. It was made a law that everyone must wear a seatbelt while driving or ride in a vehicle. I was in an accident where I was stopped at a red light with four vehicles in front of me. Another car came barreling down the off ramp and struck me from behind, pushing my full sized Chevy crew cab truck into the truck in front of me and his truck in front of the next vehicle. Even though this happened in 1994, I can still vividly see it. I looked in the mirror and saw the car coming but there was no where any of the vehicles waiting at the light could go, it happened so fast. Once the car hit my truck it was like in slow motion going through the chain reaction of vehicles hitting another. At that time head rests weren’t in trucks and my head when back and forth like a rag doll. My daughter in the passenger seat braced herself and since she was short, her head was protected by the back of the seat. However her knees took the brunt of the hit. Although I had severe back and neck injuries and my daughter had knee injuries it could have been much worse if we didn’t have our seatbelts on. Lia even buckles up when she goes out for a drive in her McLaren!

Child safety seats can save the life of a precious child. The day of the accident, my then 3 year old granddaughter was buckled into her child safety seat located in the backseat behind the driver seat. I had just dropped her back off to her mom before heading to my appointment with my daughter. When the car hit my truck it was so forceful it broke the frame around the back door next to the child safety seat. The child safety seat remained in good condition and buckled but after this happened, I never put a child seat next to a door. I now keep it in the middle of the back seat.

Wearing a face mask can help save the life of a person wearing it and possibly your loved ones. With so many people being affected with COVID, either with themselves or family having the virus or their loved ones passing away, something had to change to help protect everyone. Wearing a face mask was one change along with keeping your distance, washing hands and using hand sanitizer. All this should be common sense and State or County mandates shouldn’t have to be enforced, it should be common sense.

Way back before masks were even talked about we put a mask on Lia’s stuffed animals and then one on her. She immediately started wearing her mask where ever we went. She does get lots of thumbs up and smiles when walking through the parking lots.

Yes there are laws we shouldn’t need but I wonder how many would use their seatbelts or wear a mask if it wasn’t mandated.

Lia is our little mask spokeskid…. please wear a mask to help protect yourself and others around you. When walking into anywhere, people stop and smile at Lia wearing her mask.

I agree with both of these. I also wish the mandate to wear masks was enforced. So many people feel that masks are intruding on their ‘rights’ and that they are not necessary. Having laws will force ‘common sense’ on those that do not have it.

Our governor doesn’t make any decisions, he leaves it up to each county so I don’t think that will ever happen in SC. I’m seeing more and more cases in our community from people who went to parties over Christmas and New Years, it’s scary!

  2. Great article. Adults in the family can be an influencer no matter what the issue is. Masks, seatbelts, car seats, etc. Setting examples for the children in our life is so important and something they hopefully will carry forward in their lives.

You are so right Krisann! It’s the adults that don’t want to wear them so the children will go without also. Lia tells everyone to wear a mask and she’s only 2 years old.

  3. So true Martha! Seat belts have been compulsory in Australia for decades. I know it has saved many lives – particularly children in their mandated safety seats.
    Equally with the masks.
I agree 100% – if we can save lives by doing these simple things, what is the question?

I remember when seat belts became law in the US Frances, so many people didn’t want to wear them. It’s so simple, wear a belt perhaps save a life. When we rode motorcycles, helmets weren’t needed in our state but hubby and I always rode with them. Simple I think too.

  4. Martha, yes! I so agree with you! Also, general bad behavior like speeding and stealing– we shouldn’t need laws. But human nature is what it is. Darn. So have you fully recovered from that nasty accident? I have to say I love the matching apron and mask your friend made for Lia!

Oh yes, things like that should be common sense Kebba! My back will never be totally where it was but I’m thankful I’m walking! Lots of the back pain now is old age creping in. LOL Our neighbor made Lia’s matching outfit and she even made her a few Christmas masks!

I see people who refuse to wear masks. And I know people who won’t wear seat belts. It is sad but true that there are people in this world who have to be required to do the things that to you, me, and Lia just seem like common sense.

Excellent, thought-provoking entry. I often wonder why some view mask wearing as freedom-stealing. I look at other countries, over the years, that have experience with airborne diseases and/or pollution and they wear masks every day when they leave their homes. Maybe it’s because America has bought into the idea that we are invincible? Who knows…
