It’s a bird, it’s a plane…
Lia loves airplanes and every time one flies over the house she runs outside and waves to them even though they are just a speck in the sky. Many times I don’t even see them because it’s so tiny! But the other day we heard a load noise, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s an Osprey! What is an Osprey you ask? Will it depends on what Osprey you are talking about.
We were all outside when Lia heard the load noise and this is her conversation with me as she waited for it to get in view.
Lia: Do you hear that? Me: Yes, it’s an airplane. Lia: No that’s an Osprey. Me: I don’t see it. Lia: Wait for the Osprey. (Still just hear it and don’t see it) Lia: SEE THERE IT IS, THE OSPREY! (As she is waving to the pilot) I love how she can distinguish between an airplane, helicopter or Osprey even before she sees them just by the different sounds they make.
The Osprey finally came in view and Lia was waving so hard, thinking the pilot could see her. They make routine flyovers and I’d love to see if we can find a time when they will be landing so she could see it up close. That would really make her day!

An Osprey is a military aircraft designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. It has a distinct sound and Lia can tell an Osprey, a helicopter or a regular airplane apart from the sounds of the engine even before they come into view. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Boeing_V-22_Osprey
But wait it’s a bird, it’s a plane… yesterday I posted about our fun boat cruise and we saw an Osprey while cruising down the waterway! No this wasn’t a plane, it was a bird! An Osprey is a large, distinctively shaped hawk. Ospreys are brown with a white belly and head with a brown stripe through their eyes.
Ospreys can be found around nearly any body of water: saltmarshes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, estuaries, and even coral reefs. Their conspicuous stick nests are placed in the open on poles, channel markers, and dead trees, often over water. This is where we saw the Osprey sitting on her nest with four babies perched right on top of a channel marker in the Intercoastal Waterway.
Ospreys are birds of prey and they hunt for fish while circling the sky over water. They hover briefly before diving, feet first, to grab a fish. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Osprey/id
Did you know the Osprey is both an aircraft and a bird? I had a few of my friends look up the Osprey aircraft because they only knew of the bird. So it’s a bird, it’s a plane could be either one.
Hi Martha and Lia, that naval aircraft is very neat, I see those fly over Seal Beach, CA naval port, but didn’t know what they were called. Lia is so bright to be able to distinguish between different aircrafts and birds! Great post thank you for sharing. Sending lots of love and gratitude. Jaime
WOW Lia would be in heaven if she lived near a naval port Jaime! She enjoys all planes but the Osprey is her favorite.
Wow, that is cool dhe csn tell just by the way they sound.
She even studies things with her ears Brenda!
I am impressed that Lia can tell the difference by sound already! She is really smart and attentive! Thank you for sharing — this post has put me in a better mood today! LOL
Aww that’s what I like to read Dominique, putting you in a better mood to start your day.
Loved this tidbit.I didn’t know about the bird or the plane osprey .It’s wonderful that Lia van distinguish sounds of different planes and tell the kind. Its a sign of high level of auditory sensitivity and intelligence
When she was younger, some noises bothered her, even birds chirping or flushing the toilet. We had to cover her ears to muffle noises. She has just about out grown that thankfully and pays so much attention to different noises now. Thanks for visiting Amrita.
What a great post. I love airplanes too. I’ll be going on a plane ride in October. 🙂
How excited Amanda, hope you enjoy flying.
