Don’t get worried and think it’s already Friday when it’s only Monday but I have such a delicious Story Time by Lia to share with you that I couldn’t wait until my normal Friday Story Time. I went strawberry picking with my gramma!

While I was visiting my gramma the other weekend she asked if I wanted to pick strawberries. Of course since I love them I jumped at the idea and to pick them myself I thought would be so much fun. When we got to the Berry farm there were so many strawberry plants! The entire field was full of them! Where to we start picking?

Gramma showed me how to peek under the leaves to find the hidden strawberries. She told me to only pick the red ones and leave the white ones because they have to grow more to turn red. We can pick them the next time. I carefully pulled the red strawberries off the plant and left the white ones and the little flowers because she told me they would be berries soon too!

LOOK AT ALL THE STRAWBERRIES I PICKED!! I told gramma we had lots of strawberries to eat but she said we first had to go home and wash them. So I picked up both baskets and carried them out of the field. I wanted to eat them because they smelled so good! I had such a good time when I went strawberry picking.

But the work wasn’t done! We’re back at gramma’s house and she hulled the green tops off while I rinsed them. Of course now I could sample one of the strawberries and it was delicious!

When it was time to go back to my house, gramma gave me two bags of strawberries to take home for mommy, ma and pop. I helped ma wash them and take the green tops off.

After the strawberries were all washed, ma got a big bowl of strawberries with whipped cream for her and I to share while mommy and pop just ate the plain strawberries. With the whipped cream, they were SO YUMMY!! We put a few strawberries in the freezer because they make a delicious smoothie using frozen fruit.

Look at the delicious smoothie ma made! She cut up 2 slices of pineapple and 5 frozen strawberries and blended them together. But the finishing touch was when she sprinkled cake batter sprinkles on top of the whipped cream. It was so good and ma said it’s healthy too! It would probably be healthier without the sprinkles but they do make it look pretty, don’t they?

When I went strawberry picking I had such a fun time, I’ve never seen so many strawberries and I learned to only pick the red ones. Gramma was very proud of how I helped her both picking the berries and rinsing them off when we got back to her house. I want to pick strawberries again! Did your mouth start to water when you saw the strawberries?

I’m also growing strawberry plants! A few months ago I planted some strawberry seeds and the plants have been growing in a little pot on the window sill. Look how big they have grown! http://themarthareview.com/lias-strawberry-plants/

Yesterday afternoon I planted my little strawberry plants in the garden. I probably won’t have strawberries this year but hopefully next year! I hope you enjoyed my Story Time by Lia, I’ll be back with my normal Friday Story Time by Lia at the end of the week!

  1. I miss picking fresh fruit. Those farms are so far from where I live that it has become a task of old.

I remember climbing the apple trees to pick apples when I was younger Roy. Now the orchards don’t allow that anymore because of insurance reasons. Strawberries are safer, I’m glad Lia got to experience this.

  2. Awww very sweet and you definitely made my mouth water looking at those strawberries. I love berry picking I don’t make enough time for it. Thanks for sharing your sweet grand daughter’s story.

It brought back memories of when I was younger and I’d pick pails filled with wild strawberries and my grandmother would make strawberry jam Heidi! Lia had such a great time.

  3. Oh, what fun! Those strawberries look so good! She looks like she had a great time! I hope her strawberries grow big and strong!

They were so sweet Dominique and Lia had a great time. She checks her plants daily but don’t think she realizes it’s going to take a long time to get berries!

Awesome to see the pathway from planting strawberrys to knowing it may take a few years to yield results! And the picture of the picked strawberrys is the vision of future realization. A wonderful lesson for LIA!

Yes that’s that part Lia doesn’t understand Kate, it will take years but it will give her something to look forward to. She loves nature and gardening.

There were no bruised berries at all Jeanine. That’s the best thing about picking your own, you can pick the good ones! Lia had a great time and I had a great time eating them.

  9. I once grew strawberries on my balcony garden .I can’t explain how much fun it was watching then turn red.Absolutely lived the post. Its a blessing to eat fresh from the farm

Oh my, your balcony garden must have smelled delicious. We had a large field of wild strawberries when I was younger and would pick them for my grandmother to make jam. Wild berries are tiny so it took a lot to fill a bucket but it was worth it Amrita!
