Howe Caverns
When we went to upstate New York last week, we went to Howe Caverns located in Howe Caves, Schoharie County, New York. It’s also Wordless Wednesday so I thought it’s a perfect day to share some photos of the cave but of course I have to use words too. It’s not Friday Story Time by Lia but I have so much to write about I need more than just Friday!
Ma and I took a hike around the outside before it was time to go in the caverns. As we were walking down this huge hill, I found another walking stick! You may remember I’ve found a few in my hikes!
Lester Howe discovered the cave on May 22, 1842 and it’s 156 feet below the ground, the walls are mostly limestone and there is even a river in the cave! We took a boat ride underground!
Since the caves are so far underground they never see the sun and it was 52 degrees! These are some pictures of Howe Caverns as we went on our tour. It was so exciting to see all the different rock formations.
It’s a good thing ma bought me a sweatshirt before going that far down!
Look at the old telephone! I’ve never seen one like this, it’s a lot different from my Google Smart Phone!
There is a beautiful heart at the Bridal Alter in the cave. It’s made of quartz and the have a light about 18″ down that shines right through the heart! Our guide told us how most of Lester Howe’s children and other relatives where married down there! If you stand on the heart, it brings good luck. So of course I jump right on it! Since it was ma and pop’s 55th wedding anniversary the day we went, they stood on the heart too!
The almost two hour tour was so fun! At the end as we headed back to the elevator to go back up the guide said it’s been told if you stand on a little dot and look way up through the little hole, you can see sunshine. I looked up but he was only kidding! We were so far underground there was no way any sun could be seen!
As we were checking out the snacks ma got all excited because she saw original chocolate Necco wafers! Ma told me when she was little there was a candy store in her town and the sold this for 5 cents!
Mommy, pop, ma and me had a super fun time at Howe Caverns and walking around the outside were the beautiful mountains and farmland.
I have a lot more to write about my trip for my Friday Story Time by Lia! I’ll give you a hint, I helped make cookies at the Cookie House!!
What a fun trip. Glad you enjoyed it.
It was awesome Amanda!
