How to Correct the Title in WordPress
Have you ever written your blog only to realize you misspelled a word in the title after you post the blog? That has happened to me a few times and after looking back at all the areas to check spelling I figured it out! This is how to correct the title in WordPress after it’s been published.
When I first start my blog, I add the title then the opening paragraph with the title listed again. You can see by these screen shots that there is no “Slug” on the bottom left side and the title is not yet listed under the Permalink URL Slug on the right side of my blog.
I hit “save draft” after every few paragraphs because I learned the hard way once when writing my blog. I was just about finished, had my photos added and ready to publish when my computer crashed!! Along went my blog because I hadn’t been saving as I go. I also don’t write them in Word so I was out of luck, I had to re-write the entire blog! Now look at these screen shots after I saved my draft. It automatically filled in the Slug on the bottom left side and it also added it to the Permalink URL Slug on the right side.
Whatever you type for your title will show up on both these locations. But what happens if you don’t realize you have a spelling error in the title line until have you publish your blog? If you are like me, you panic and think you have to re-write your entire blog which I did a few times. But then I started searching around to see if I could come up with a another way instead of re-writing my blog before I gave up. To me it’s a challenge to try to come up with a solution on my own and when I do figure it out I love to share with others just in case someone else has run into the same problem.
So this is how I figured it out! Let’s just say I typed my title “How to Correct the Tilte in WordPress” and didn’t notice the misspelling until after I published my blog. Look how WordPress automatically changed the spelling in both the Slug and Permalink. After I corrected my spelling in the title it didn’t change either of these.
I started trying to figure out how to have the correct link show up after I had updated the spelling in my blog title. The first thing I noticed was the Slug didn’t auto correct so I corrected the spelling but when I published my blog it was still showing the misspelled title. I was checking everything, getting a bit frustrated but I was determined to come up with a fix.
Next I went over to the right side of my blog and checked the different sections, Status & visibility, Yoast SEO, Permalink and OH WAIT!! THAT’S WHERE THE PROBLEM IS!! The misspelling was still in the Permalink URL Slug! Once I corrected that, I was back in business!! I have found that sometimes both change simultaneously but I always check both just to make sure.
After I found the culprit I went back to update my already published blog. I corrected the spelling in both the Slug and Permalink URL Slug then updated my blog. The title was now spelled correctly when my blog was shared on my sites. There is no need to delete the entire blog just because of a spelling error.
This is a blog I made up for a demonstration only. I misspelled a word in the title and it shows the Slug and Permalink URL Slug incorrect also. Once I corrected the title those two sections were still incorrect. I went back to each of the Slugs and typed the correct spelling, making sure to add the dash. I clicked update and now the corrected spelling will show up in social media and other places I post it.
Notice my blog has the correct spelling but when I shared my link it came up incorrect because the Slug and Permalink URL Slug didn’t correct automatically when I corrected the blog spelling.
Once I went back and manually made the correction, the blog link matches the blog title! I hope my blog about How to Correct the Title in WordPress helps you out if this ever happens to you, it’s a lot easier than having to re-write your entire blog!

I seem to learn something new on my blog often Dominique. I’ve had my blog since December 2014 and it’s still a learning process.

Thanks Angie, I wrote this topic to help a blogger friend that was having this problem. I love sharing me tips I find a solution to.
I’m glad you were able to figure it out. Seemed like it would have been such a hassle the other way. But either way, I I don’t think I could ever figure out how to do WordPress. I admire everything you have done with your blog!
WordPress isn’t complicated once it’s set up Jeanine. There is a slight learning curve (I’m still learning that after 6 years but I can usually figure thinks out before pulling my hair out!
Great post.
Just another helpful tip Amanda.
Hi Martha, I revisited this blog, and since I commented last year, the WordPress site has changed and no longer looks like the pictures you show. I can’t find the spot with the URL slug to make the title changes. Please advise if you know what I am talking about. Sending lots of love, Jaime.
Oh darn Jaime, I’ll have to research your new format and hope to come up with a solution!
