A few years ago I saved an old rusty wheelbarrow from the landfill. My neighbor was going to throw it away until I saved it! It sat in the corner of the backyard for almost a year and then Rich was ready to toss it. NO YOU CAN’T DO THAT! LOL So I came up with a plan!

Lia planted wild flowers in the spring and for fall Lia put mums and hay in the wheelbarrow and rolled it out in the front yard. At Christmas we turned it into Santa’s sleigh filled with packages and Santa’s bag!

Rusty Galvanized Tubs Find!

This fall I saved a few rusty galvanized tubs from the landfill! These are the kind that when I was a kid we would fill them with water and bob for apples, the entire town would be slopping spit to get an apple! LOL I had no idea what to use them for but I knew I would come up with a plan. Maybe plant vegetables in them for the winter months or nice winter flowers, I knew I would find a plan for them.

I figured out what to do with them, make our fall display out of one of them. Rich filled the bottom with 50 pounds of play sand so when I put the flowers in it they would be over the top. Then we added mums around the edge and cornstalks in the center! Thing is now it was so heavy from the sand we couldn’t move it. Rich got our dolly and we loaded the tub on that to pull around to the front yard.

It looked quite festive but the cornstalks kept falling every which way so we cut them down and it looked much better. When Lia came over after school she added some pampas grass to the center. We put the bottom of the cornstalks on the dolly to camouflage it then Lia added a few pillows too!

A trip to the Dollar Store and we decorated our Agave plant with ghosts and goblins. The witch hanging next to the door laughs as anyone approaches. So I was happy the way I transformed my rusty galvanized tub into our happy fall display.

As for the plant, my sister gave us the small one foot Agave plant in 2010. It grew a little then died. It did this for 6 or 7 years when I finally told Rich we should dig it out and put something else there. Well the plant must have heard me and didn’t like that idea because it started growing! This first picture is when Lia was 1 1/2 years old and the other is the bush now. It has grown immensely but so has Lia and both the plant and Lia have grown in proportion over the past 2 1/2 years!

Pillow Stuffing Idea

One more tip for you! I had these fall pillow covers but I knew if I added pillow forms or stuffing to them they would get moldy or mildew being outside. So I came up with a solution for outdoor pillows. I stuffed them with plastic bags that I usually take to the recycling center! Just another one of my crafty ideas for a happy fall display.

  1. Martha, I love it! That’s genius, stuffing pillow covers with plastic bags!! And why your agave came back– I have no idea, even though it’s a plant we see here a lot. I love that you get out there and decorate for the season. Especially with the witch who laughs when people get near her. I love those! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿงก

The bags inside pillows is great when using them outdoors Kebba.. And since the back of the fall pillows are cream, I even turned them into Christmas pillows but flipping them around and adding decorative ribbon to them! I’m so far behind on my replies to my comments but they are just about done and I’m ready for the January challenge!

    What fun ideas!
I was sad to see my old wheelbarrows hauled off last fall, as I’d planted in a couple – but moved to my daughter’s whilst Rose Cottage was under construction, and we brought over 70 smaller pots of plants!!
I added a could of galvanized tubs as planters this spring, and am enjoying them!

  4. Oh my gosh, I love your entire display!! I love to decorate for fall (2nd only to Christmas). And what a great idea for the pillow covers. That is brilliant. You have done a fantastic job. And boy, is Lia growing. Like you said, right along with your plant. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I love Fall. It’s so pretty. Matt and I really enjoy our walks together and I get to describe the fall colors to him.
