Got Stale Donuts?
Got stale donuts? Don’t toss them, re-invent something new! Sometimes it’s hard to pass up a deal on buy one dozen get the second for a dollar. But even after passing donuts around to our neighbors we still end up with extra donuts. These are a few ideas to salvage the stale donuts!
This glazed donut wasn’t too stale so I microwaved it for 15 seconds and turned it into a layer cake topped with a mini brownie, whipped topping and a dollop of brownie batter. Lia has a new thing now, she sprinkles yellow sugar sprinkles over and in all her recipes, calling it “made with sunshine.”
Donut French Toast
If you like french toast you’ll want to try my donut french toast! I sliced a glaze donut like a bagel then dipped it in an egg, milk and cinnamon mixture. Add butter to a frying pan, cook until browned on one side then flip to the other!
Breakfast is served! I topped my french donut toast with butter, syrup (which really isn’t needed because the donut is already sweet) , whipped topping and sprinkles! It was so good!
Faux Monkey Bread
I had eight glazed donuts that were getting towards the stale side so I decided to try making my mother’s monkey bread with donuts!
Start by cutting the donuts into bite sized pieces and spread evenly around a buttered bundt pan.
Next add 3/4 cup of butter to a saucepan and let it melt on medium/low heat. Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of white sugar then sprinkle some cinnamon in the mix. Stir until the sugar and butter are blended together then pour over the donuts.
Bake at 325 degrees for about 15 – 20 minutes then remove from oven and let it cool in the pan for a bit. Turn the pan upside down on a plate and your faux monkey bread is ready to eat! It was delicious but I realized a few pieces of the donuts didn’t get fully covered with the mixture and those pieces were a bit dry. I think when I make my next batch I’ll drop the donut pieces in the mixture to make sure they get totally coated, then pour them in the bundt pan.
My stale donuts have been re-cycled and both the donut french toast and faux monkey bread were delicious! So I guess you could say now I re-cycle donuts! LOL
While I applaud your creativity on what to do with stale donuts, I have a question for you: How do you end up having stale donuts in the first place?? š
LOL Tamara, with Alex working at Krispy Kreme sometimes we end up with way too many.
I just had dinner and after reading this, Iām ready for dessert!
There you go Elisa!
I love the creativity! Any time we can reduce food waste is also a good thing, thanks for sharing!
My thoughts exactly Kimberly! I don’t like to through food away and this is one way to “recycle” it.
Clever Martha! So many ideas. I never have stale donuts. I almost never don’t have donuts.
With my granddaughter working at Krispy Kreme, she’s always bringing over donuts!
Martha, yum yum! The monkey bread is brilliant! I would make that in a heartbeat, for a brunch dish. Now that I’m serving for one, the donut French Toast really appeals to me. With maple syrup! And how wondrous that Lia wants to sprinkle “light” in and on her baked goods. Lovely!
Yes the monkey bread is better for maybe company because it’s best to eat it while it’s warm. The french toast is delicious Kebba and a great way to use donuts that are close to being tossed.
OH man I’ve had Donuts this month but no, Krispy Kreme which would be so good but Charlie doesn’t care for them. I think he is crazy because there so good. The next time our Donuts go stale I will have Charlie use some of the recipes in his Homeschool Cooking Class instead of throwing them away.
This works great with any donuts Glenda, hope Charlie tried them.
