Get in the Groove

Today’s suggested blog topic is get in the groove since this is day nine of the January Ultimate Blog Challenge. Our blog host is a Beatles fan but I’m a country music fan. Paul suggested to share photographs of part of our lives that people may not know about.

So why not share about the Alabama Band! They started playing for tips at the Bowery, a small bar in Myrtle Beach back in 1973. At that time they were known as Wild Country. My sister and her friends got to know the band well and they would have practice sessions where she was living back then. This is a blog about their Alabama Band history I wrote back in January 2016, the year I first joined the UBC!

Rich and I had never heard of the band until we came to Myrtle Beach 1983. They opened The Alabama Theatre and we would come down from upstate New York for every concert they had. We were hooked on them and I even called my favorite country music station in upstate New York when we came home from one of their concerts and they started playing their songs! This is one of the few records they recorded under their Wild Country name before they changed to Alabama. The signed photo is from my grandson when he was in college in Alabama. Randy’s niece and him were friends and she surprised me with this.

Alabama Band had a huge following, their songs were more like life stories. I embroidered a “fan” on the back of my fan jacket and that made quite a hit when we went to their concerts. And I still have it!

At their Alabama Band Reunion in 2013, we had front row center seats for back to back concerts and Randy tossed my this pick at the end of the show! My two favorite songs from the group are I’m in a Hurry and Angels Among Us. If you haven’t heard these, check them out!

There’s something beautifully rhythmic about finding your groove, almost like aligning with the unseen energy around us. Your post captures that flow perfectly—it’s a reminder that balance and harmony are within reach if we just listen to the rhythm of life.

  2. I like Alabama too, but I’d say you are a true fan!! I’m glad you were able to see them in concert and enjoy their music.

I love live music, there’s nothing like it! I try to go to at least a few live shows a year. Thanks so sharing your love of Alabama with us!

Oh, what fun! There’s nothing better than going to a live performance of a favorite musical group! In December of 2023, my sister and I went to watch Cherish the Ladies perform live! They played some great Celtic music (one of my favorite genres) and they were hilarious, as well. That was so much fun for us and a great memory, too.

You’re right, Martha, I didn’t know this about you! Thanks to Spotify, I am now listening to “if you’re going to play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band” – catchy!

A little about me you didn’t know Tamara! I’ll have to pull up some more hidden “about me” posts. LOL Their songs do have a catchy tone to them, unfortunately, the drummer Jeff Cook, passed away a few years ago.

I love Country Music and Albama is one of my favorite bands I love there Christmas song Christmas in Dixie. I would have loved to see Randy in concert. But I also love Rock n Roll which David prefers and the Beatles is one of my favorite bands. I can hear there songs playing in my head as I write this. Charlie may be a teenager but he knows both groups and can sting songs from both of them even though he likes Jazz more.

Something about country music with both Rich and I Glenda, we’ve always enjoyed it. As for Rock n Roll, bring back the 50’s and 60’s and I’m ready to rock!
