Gardens for Throwback Thursday

Since I missed Wordless Wednesday, I’m sharing some gardens for Throwback Thursday.

We have always had a small vegetable garden in our backyard. I loved watching the squash, peppers. lettuce, eggplant and other vegetables grow big enough to pick. Even when Lia was tiny, she would run out to the garden and check the vegetables and get so excited when she found something that was ready to pick. In the fall, the vegetable garden would be transformed into Lia’s Pinwheel Garden until spring came along and the vegetables took over again.

Last year I did nothing in the back yard, no vegetable garden and I let most of the flowers fend for themselves. About the only thing growing was weeds. But this year I know I had to get back to a garden.

I turned our vegetable garden into Rich’s Memory Garden and I had it done in time for Easter but have been working on it since then adding even more plants and plaques. The first picture was taken in April after the plants started to grow. It didn’t take long for the garden to become so beautiful. Even the birds have been visiting the bird baths and I was lucky to snap a picture of this female cardinal getting a drink.

Last night I was looking out the window at Rich’s garden and I told my granddaughter I wish I could see a butterfly on the butterfly bush soon. Not even 5 minutes later, he showed up!

My other goal was to revive my Mom’s Memory Garden. As I mentioned, I let her garden turn into a bed of weeds last year. My goal was to get it in shape by Mother’s Day and I made it with a few weeks to spare!

After I pulled all the weeds and removed the sunken rocks out, I cleaned up the garden and put the rock border back where it was visible. The center yellow rose bush has grown double it’s size since I planted in a month ago and I have also added canna lilies behind the shed in the empty space. Those should start blooming in a month or so. I know mom is loving her garden.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the transformation from the Throwback Thursday photos to the recent ones. I have been working on a few other areas that I will share with you later.
