Fun Bird Feeder Project

Fun Bird Feeder Project

I love watching our backyard birds and we have many feeders all around our yard.  Last year I made a simple bird feeder from a toilet paper roll but it wasn’t very weather friendly so this year I came up with another fun bird feeder project.   It’s simple, fun and a great project to do with your children or grand children.

You need a plastic cup, peanut butter, bird seed and a long nail. (The nail is optional, you could also attach a wire or heavy string and hang it up)

First thing I did was poke a hole in the bottom of the cup to secure when completed.   The fun part is “painting” the cup with peanut butter and then roll the cup in bird seed.

After the peanut butter and bird seed has been added, your cup will look like this. It’s now ready to attach over the nail or add wire to hang in a tree.

I used a long nail with a big head (more like a spike) and hammered it in the edge of one of the beams in my raised bed garden.  Take the cup and put over the nail, having the nail head on the outside of the cup to keep it secure.   I came up with this idea after making the cardboard tube on.  On that one, I set it over the nail but some bird picked up the entire tube and carried it away!

If you prefer, you can poke a hole about an inch down from the bottom, on each side and thread of wire or heavy string through the cup to hang on a hook or even a tree branch.

After the plastic cup is secured over the nail, I covered the bottom of the cup that is now the top with peanut butter and sprinkled bird seed over it.

It’s fun to watch the birds eat the bird seed off the cup and it’s such a simple project to do with the kiddos.  Even if you don’t have kiddos, it’s still a great way to add small bird feeders around your yard.

The birds cleaned up the seed and peanut butter so now all I have to do is spread more peanut butter over the cup and sprinkle with bird seed.

I would love to see your fun bird feeders if you make one!

I like coming up with fun projects. Now that school is out, we have quite a few youngsters in our community, I might start a little project day every so often for them. Thanks for visiting Savvy Age.

I use to pick up huge pine cones I would do the same thing you did with peanut butter and bird seed years ago. I know have a bird feeder I fill with seed. I like your project. I do have a case of peanut butter. I wonder if I can get the teens or at least my daughter interested in making something up.

I use our large pine cones too Sandy! I thought the cups would be easier for little hands, some of the pine cones are sharp. I’m planning a craft day when summer arrives for th kiddos that roam around with nothing to do. Thanks for visiting.

How much fun is that! I’ve seen something similar done with pine cones too, but that is less recycling I guess.

    • Martha says:

Ive used pine cones too Nona but the cups are easier on the hands for little ones. Our pine cones are large with sharp points on the ends. Good way to keep kiddos busy!
