FRUGAL OR CHEAP
I was trying to decide if I’m frugal or cheap when I plan my meals so I looked up the actual definitions and I came to the conclusion that I’m actually both. I am very economical on my shopping and I love to save the best I can. But I also like to look for low prices, but not low quality. So while I’m a little of both, I actually think I’m more frugal than cheap.
Frugal definition, economical in use or expenditure; prudently saving or sparing; not wasteful
Cheap definition, costing very little; relatively low in price
The other day I went grocery shopping and they had racks of spare ribs on sale, buy one get one free. Each package cost about $20.00 and there was enough from each one for two plus meals for hubby and me. So the two racks of ribs cost $20.00 and we will get at least four meals from them. Not a bad price for $2.50 per person per meal.
Of course I had to come up with the rest of the meal and since corn of the cob was on sale for 5 for $1.00, I grabbed 10 ears, enough for three meals. I then looked through my vegetable bin and pulled out four potatoes. At the time I didn’t know how I was going to prepare them and I like just coming up with ideas of the top of my head.
I cut the potatoes in pieces, layered them in a baking pan and sprinkled an envelope of dry onion soup mix over the top. I then sprayed the potatoes and soup mix with oil, covered the pan and baked in the oven for about 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, I had the rack of ribs on the barbecue and was it a big rack! I like to brown the one side and cook them until almost done then flip over to the other side and add barbecue sauce. I went inside to get the sauce and when I went back to the grill, it was dead! Hubby changed the propane tank, thinking it was out of gas, but nope, the grill died!
Luckily they were just about done so I moved them to a pan, added the barbecue sauce and finished them in the oven. By now the potatoes were done as was the corn on the cob and everything smelled so good!
So dinner for two was $5.00 for the ribs, 80 cents for the corn (I cooked 4 ears at 20 cents each), and maybe 50 cents worth of potatoes. This brought the total to $6.30 and I added a bit more for the package of dry soup mix and the small amount of barbecue sauce so tops, the meal for two was $7.50. I would say with the relatively low prices I paid and also prudently saving, that makes me both cheap and frugal. I like the word frugal better though, it kinda has a cool ring to it! What kind of deals do you look for when grocery shopping? Are you being frugal when you shop?

I have been buying my meat lately from a local grocery store; one of the few that sells the kosher versions. And, since it has been proffering $ 10 off when spending $ 50 or $ 5 when spending $25, that means I am buying the beef or chicken for 80% of the store’s normal price. Which is about 6% higher than the kosher butcher shop, that is 35 minutes away. (Yes, I think they determined the premium it would charge would still be useful for those of us who don’t buy 50 pounds of meat at a clip- because of the gas and time involved). Except, now my freezer (I have two) is filled to the brim. Time to depelete the stocks!
I love to stock up when meat is on sale and then I live off that until almost gone. The only time I buy more is if they have a discounted price that is so low I can’t resist. With the price of foods, I’m always looking for deals. Sounds like you make out great, what time is dinner Roy? LOL
I’d say you are frugally side 😂
I like quality foods but always look for great sales. I don’t remember the last time I actually purchased meat at the regular marked price. I love scoping out deals Savvy Age. Thanks for stopping by.
