Frozen Cabbage Success
I love cabbage whether used in a salad, steamed or fried. My favorite recipe is fried cabbage with bacon, it’s so quick and easy to make, healthy for you and delicious (if you like cabbage) Last month I experimented freezing fresh cabbage. http://themarthareview.com/recipes-freezing-cabbage/ Today I’m sharing my results about the frozen cabbage success.
I took a bag of my frozen cabbage out of the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator. It did hold some water in it so I pulled some of the leaves apart and patted them down with paper towels. That picked up almost all the water.
Usually I chop the cabbage in very thin slices then chop the slices into smaller pieces. For the frozen cabbage I just pulled it apart in small pieces since it wasn’t firm like fresh cabbage. I browned the bacon, left the small amount of bacon grease in the pan and tossed in the cabbage and cooked until browned.
Conclusion
The meal didn’t taste any different, still delicious and the cabbage browned just as well. It did seem to be a bit more “moist” when eating it but that wasn’t a bad thing because it wasn’t dry. So my conclusion….if cabbage is on sale and I can get a head for $1.00, I would freeze it again. I like how it’s easy to pull out of the freezer and it’s ready to cook after thawing out. I’m going to try cooking it frozen next time!
It’s good to know that you can freeze cabbage.
I love cabbage and now I can always have a backup when I get cabbage cravings Naomi!
I’m glad that things worked out. I like cabbage too!
Cabbage is not only delicious but healthy also Amanda!
Hi Martha, Here’s an idea, try shredding a third of what you are going to freeze, dicing a third and then lightly sauteeing the other third. Seal each in its own zip lock freezer bag and then compare them as you use them. Being from Wisconsin farm country we never had a problem getting cabbage up north. One of our friends held cabbage in big barns and released it depending on the price so there was cabbage all year. Like you, cabbage is a big item in our house, sometimes with bacon and sometimes with kielbasa and always with corned been on March 17th. We have no problem getting it here in Mexico but Brussels sprouts are harder to find and they are one of my personal favorites..
That’s a terrific idea Chef Williams, thanks for the suggestion. I love cabbage, I have my grandmother’s recipe for cabbage salad from way back.
