First Born Child
Last September was the first Cornerstone Content Blog Challenge and for Day 6 the topic is content that evokes emotion. I wrote about Lia’s 2nd birthday party on how it was a day filled with emotions of happiness. http://themarthareview.com/emotions-of-happiness-lias-2nd-birthday-party/
For today’s blog I was going to write this for yesterday’s topic about memories since this fits under that topic also. But what a better topic to write about that evokes emotion than that of your first born child. Rich and I were excited when we learned we were expecting our first child with a due date on Christmas day 1968!
I went for my last scheduled OBGYN check on December 23rd only to find out that the baby wasn’t as far along as thought and the doctor told us it would probably be closer to New’s Years for delivery. Back in those days we didn’t know about the gender until the baby was born so we figured we had at least a week to go until we found out what our little bundle was.
On the evening of December 24th I told Rich I was hungry for a pizza. Even though it was Christmas Eve the pizza shop delivered a delicious pizza about 10PM. I was happy, I had a full tummy and was ready to settle in for a long winter nap and wait for Santa to arrive Christmas morning.
My long winter nap ended about 2AM Christmas morning with a severe back ache. After trying moving, walking and adding pillows to my back it was only getting worse. As a precaution Rich called my doctor and explained about my back ache. He said it must be the baby moved and possible pushing on a nerve because there was no way I could be in labor. He suggested to get a heating pad and almost guaranteed that would help but call if there were any changes.
The heating pad seemed to help a bit but by 5AM I had so much back pain I could hardly move. Again I waited it out until about 6AM when the doctor called to see how I was feeling. After he realized the pain level he told me to go to the emergency room just as a precaution. Rich loaded me in the car and off we went getting to the hospital about 6:30AM.
After being checked out I was told I was in labor and they wheeled me to the deliver room right away. Other than a back ache I didn’t have any other labor pains! I remember one nurse was very angry with me. It seems like her shift ended at 7AM and she was no way going to stay any longer so she told me if things progressed in the next few minutes she would have to stay until the baby was born! Well I either wasn’t paying attention the baby wasn’t.
At 7:14AM we had a beautiful 9lb. 2 oz. precious baby girl with a head full of thick black hair, our Christmas gift to the grandparents from us! The doctor was sure she wouldn’t arrive until New Year’s but he didn’t mind showing up on Christmas to deliver our healthy little one.
We choose the name Christine Marie in honor of Christ and Mary since Christine was born on Christmas Day. What a Christmas filled with emotions back in 1968, our first born child was born on such a special day.
I was going through Chris’s baby book the other day and I came across a lock of hair from her first haircut. I didn’t realize it at the time I sealed it up over 50 years ago but it’s almost in the shape of a heart
Two years ago we celebrated Chris’ 50th birthday! WOW our daughter was 50 years old Christmas day 2018! Chris has a wonderful family of 4 children and 7 grandchildren. So that’s where some of our grandchildren and great grandchildren came from! In this second picture I think her hubby is saying, “WOW your 50 years old?”
Chris loves peacocks and the color purple so of course her birthday present was a purple Minky with a peacock fabric front!
I think back to Christmas day 1968 and the emotions still run high because not only did Rich and I have our first child born on Christmas but we also met Christmas day 1965. I remember everything so clear like it was yesterday. Something about your first born child, the emotions of happiness and the wonderful memories never end.
If you want to read another emotional post, it’s about our first born child having her first born! http://themarthareview.com/first-born/ Talk about emotions, our 1st grandbaby was born on October 29, 1987 and then he had his first born child, our 6th great grandbaby, on February 4, 2019!
A Christmas baby!! Wow, I’m glad you got to the hospital in time. What a lovely name, too, for a Christmas baby! Pretty baby picture, too.
The funny thing is I had no labor pains except a back ache. Both my deliveries were quick and easy Jeanine.
What a beautiful baby!!! Who grew up to be a beautiful woman! Thank you for the story of how your family came to be! And Merry Christmas! (well, it’s actually Advent so…. happy Advent??!)
Thank you Alice, as Chris got older we started celebrating her birthday the week before Christmas so she didn’t get left out of presents. LOL
Such a wonderful string of synchronicities. BTW, because of the back pain, was your Christmas baby born sunny side up? Maybe she turned before her actual moment of arrival!!
Well I wish I could tell you I remember but I can’t Kate but that was the only “labor” pain I had. Was that way for both my deliveries, quick and easy.
My stepson was an Xmas baby- and he was thrilled when he became part of our blended family…Because we didn’t celebrate Christmas- so he could FINALLY have a birthday celebration.
That’s the hardest part about having a Christmas birthday if celebrating Christmas Roy, all the gifts get rolled into one. LOL We started celebrating Chris’ birthday the Saturday before Christmas so she could have a special day.
Martha, wowie! Christine Marie was a Christmas baby! I both laughed and cried as I read your post. Very heartwarming. There is so much love in your family. Thank you!
I laugh at some of it too Kebba! I can still hear me telling Rich I wanted a pizza. 🤣 I wonder if that’s what Chris loves pizza?
Another great post.
Christmas is so special for our family Amanda.
