Faint Knock at the Front Door
Early Morning Faint Knock at the Front Door
We usually wake up early morning but the other morning hubby was in quite a bit of pain from his hip replacement and it was hard for him to get walking so we didn’t rush. It was about 7:00 AM when we were heading downstairs and I thought I heard a very faint knock at the front door. We made it downstairs and I heard it again. Now I don’t like to open the door unless I know who it is but I first thought it was maybe some of the neighbor children who missed the bus and needed a ride to school. As we were getting our bearings, hubby said someone is knocking on the back door. To get to our back door, someone has to open the gate and walk all the way around the back. So now I started to get nervous, maybe something happened to the workers from our neighbor’s home and needed help. I ran upstairs, grabbed my robe and on the way back down, the knock is at the front door again!
But now this is when it gets very spooky. As I was coming downstairs, I heard a phone ringing in our living room that wasn’t mine or hubby’s. So I braved it and yelled through the closed-door, “Who is it?” A voice on the other side said, “It’s me, Alex.” Alex is our granddaughter who lives with us so I quickly opened the door and there she stands with breakfast drinks from McDonald’s. Of course my nerves get me and I asked where her house key was, I couldn’t figure out why she would knock on the door when she usually uses her key. Then I didn’t see her car in the driveway so the first thing that went through my mind was she either had car trouble or an accident. Alex puts the drinks on the table and again I asked where her key was and she picks up a set of car keys and her house key and shows them to me. I was still very confused so I asked where her car was. She told me to go look in the driveway.
I head out, heart racing, expecting to see something wrong but instead I see two cars! Her car was parked behind a Ford Mustang that wasn’t there the following night. So for what seemed like forever, I’m looking at both cars trying to make sense of this whole morning. Finally it hit me, I turned around and asked Alex if that was Zac’s car! Zachary is our grandson from Indiana and he and his sweetie drove fourteen hours down to check on “Pop” and his new hip!
Alex had given them her house key to come in when they arrived but they pulled in about 3:00 AM and stayed out in the car for a few hours because they didn’t want our dog to bark and wake us up! (Such caring grands!) It seems like they had the car window open but when their car isn’t running, it senses people inside and the alarm system goes off!! Hubby and I never even heard that and the car was parked right under our bedroom window! They finally came inside around 5:00 AM, went upstairs and fell asleep while waiting for us to wake up.
Meanwhile, Alex runs to McDonald’s and that’s how she got locked out of the house! As for when I heard the phone ringing when I first heard the knock on the door it was Alex calling Zac to let him know she didn’t have her key! The phone was in the living room charging while the he and Jordan were upstairs sleeping so no one heard it ringing except me and my wild imagination.
Once we arrived back at the house, Zac pulled in and he went across the street to talk with our little neighbor lady who hadn’t seen him in years. She was excited to see him and how much he had grown. The two stood in her driveway chatting, she mentioned to him that she thought his car was going to blow up (it’s not but has a VERY loud exhaust!) and he asked her if she was still doing her baking. He remembered that from years ago. They said good-bye and Zac come back in the house.
Great that your grands are around to keep up the spirits during convalescence!
Our grands bring sunshine on a cloudy day, smiles on a sad day and just all around happiness and joy when they are here Roy. Love them all so much and when Zac drive 14 hours down unexpectedly, that was true love and joy! Thanks for stopping by, I need to get back to blogging more steady!
