Essential Oil Flea Treatment

Essential Oil Flea Treatment

There is nothing more irritating to both dogs and humans as fleas!!  It’s irritating to humans because we don’t want to see our dogs in agony with scratching and rubbing their skin raw from fleas.  While there are many commercial products for flea prevention, I prefer to use the natural approach as it’s safer since there are no chemicals and it’s more economical. My essential oil flea treatment makes your dog smell good also!

I love using essential oils for many things around the house from cleaning, deodorizing, facial scrubs, hair care, and even oil diffuser for relaxation.  But I especially like using essential oils as a flea treatment for my dog because it works quickly.

Sometimes fleas can’t be seen because they jump around but if your dog is constantly scratching, there is a good chance fleas are the culprit.  If you pull the fur apart you may see what looks like regular dirt from the yard but if you look deeper it may be flea dirt.  Flea dirt looks like little dark specks of yard dirt but if you wet a paper towel and rub over the area you can tell the difference.  If the part of the wet towel you rubbed on your dog turns a reddish-brown, it is a good sign it’s flea dirt because the flea dirt is actually flea poop and dried blood.

There are a variety of different essential oils that I find work great to get rid of fleas but my two favorites are Peppermint or Lavender.  Both have a great smell and the Lavender also relaxes my dog.  It’s as easy as giving your dog a bath.

If I see flea dirt, I make a mixture of a small amount of Coconut oil (a little less than 1/4 cup) with about 20 drops of Peppermint essential oil and rub it over my dog’s back, ears, legs and it loosens up the flea dirt within a few minutes.  I leave this on for about 10 minutes and if there are any fleas hiding, this kills them right away.

Next I bathe him in oatmeal shampoo. I love how Natural Rapport Complete Pet Wash  does such a great job on washing, conditioning, deodorizing, and moisturizing plus it detangles and has a fresh scent.   This is my pup after a previous essential oil flea treatment and his blog on  What a Clean and Fresh Smelling Pup!

Once you dog is free from fleas you will want to make sure his bedding is also.  If his bed has blankets, wash them in laundry detergent and add a few drops of peppermint oil to the wash.   I also mix about 1/8 cup of water and 20 drops of Lavender essential oil in a spray bottle and spray the bedding, and around the carpeted areas where he sleeps.  For preventative flea control, once a week put 2 to 3 drops of Lavender oil between the shoulders and ears, rubbing it in and spray the bedding weekly as well.  Lavender oil is also relaxing so you pup will have a good rest in his flea free bed.

There are other essential oils that are good for flea control but the Peppermint and Lavender are my two favorites.  I like the 4 oz. sized bottles, they last longer.

I like the idea but if your dog doesn’t have fleas how long will it work to keep them flea free

You can rub the oil between the shoulder blades and behind the ears once a week as preventative. I also spray the bedding weekly with a water/oil combo.
