Draining Tuna
Draining Tuna
Have you noticed all the water in a can of tuna? There seems to be more liquid than tuna and when it’s drained in a strainer, you lose some of the tuna along with the water. I came up with a solution draining or tuna easily. I made a small bag from organza to use as a strainer. You can also purchase Nut Milk Bags, used for soaking nuts and they work just as good.
After opening the cans of tuna, I set the bag in a bowl and dump the tuna in the bag while the liquid immediately starts to drain. Next I squeeze the bag to get any excess liquid out but I leave enough so the tuna its not too dry.
After all drained, empty the bag of tuna in a bowl, turning the bag inside out to make sure you get all the tuna out.
The bag is easy to clean, just wash with dish washing liquid and rinse good. Hang to dry so it’s ready for next time.
Mix with your favorite salad dressing or mayo and you have the fixings for a delicious tuna sandwich or tuna on a bed of lettuce without having soggy tuna. This is a simple way to drain the liquid from your tuna and have a quick and delicious meal.
TUNA SANDWICHES sound so unsexy but these look SO GOOD! 😀
Handy advice! Tuna is a favorite snack, and I never thought to strain it in this manner, but this is practical and effective. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I love tuna both as a meal or a snack with crackers but I didn’t like “losing” the tuna down the drain! Thanks for stopping by Sondi!
Looks delicious! I just realized that I have some tuna in my pantry… time to whip up some sandwiches!
Sometimes the simplest meals are the best! I love tuna melts, and mix up chopped olives in it at times. Thanks for visiting GiGi!
So did you make your sandwich Timothy? Tuna is nice as a meal or just a snack with crackers. Thanks for visiting!
Oooooh… I never thought of that. We’re always trying to get the last bit out of every type of foodstuff (with eight kids, you have to pinch a penny til it screams!) What a great tip!!
Since the cut the size of the tuna cans down, I think they added more water to the less amount of tuna! I was amazed at how much tuna I would lose by straining it in a strainer or even just by covering the can with the top and drained it, I still lost tuna! I like to come up with ways to save. Thanks for visiting Elisabeth!
Great post and good idea! i never thought of that use for organza!
I love to think outside the box Kim! Thanks for stopping by!
Martha, thanks for the great idea/s for streamlining tuna dishes. Tuna used to come as chunks in that can, which you could mainly lift out, not manymany little bits. I also love your photos and plating. Thanks!
That’s right Kebba! I forgot how it use to have big chunks that had to be broken in smaller pieces, not a can full of tiny flakes. Thanks for visiting!
What a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing!!!!
I like to use as much as I can instead of it going down the drain Jennifer. Thanks for visiting!
