Down in the Valley
A video of my 101 year old mother-in-law singing Down in the Valley.
“Down in the Valley“, also known as “Birmingham Jail” is a traditional American folk song. The song has been recorded by many artists including Burl Ives and Andy Griffith. The verse that mentions Birmingham Jail is in reference to the Birmingham City Jail which was “home” to some moonshiners in the 1920’s. I never knew the history of this song but when I was growing up, I had always liked to sing it with my mother.
My mother-in-law also loved to sing. A few weeks before she passed away, her health aide videoed her singing this song. She passed away January 13, 2019 at 101 years old. A nice memory to be able to hear her voice even though she’s gone.
That really was pretty Anne …… 101 how wonderful!
Thanks for listening Dee, I know have a video memory of mom’s voice.
Beautiful!
Thanks Danjay, mom was quite the singer in her younger years. Now I have a great memory.
That was very moving! In fact, you got me again, Martha. I think, because it reminded me of my mom. My son had a birthday right before she died, and I didn’t think she’d be able to sing Happy Birthday to him, but she did. Thanks for sharing this beautiful video.
Darn, Jeanine, I forgot to put the tissue disclaimer on my post! How sweet that you mom sang Happy Birthday to your son. That is a memory you and him will hold dear forever!
What a beautiful and precious gift she left you. You are blessed to have something like this. Most of us have to rely on our memories – and I know that as I get older, my memory fades. Thank you so very much for sharing this lovely video of your mother-in-law.
Thanks Eydie, I’m thinking of transferring it onto a voice box so I can always have it close. Thanks for visiting and listening to mom’s beautiful singing voice.
I forgot all about this song.
Glad you have memories to pass along to others- and for yourself.
I sure will have a great memory to pass down to my grands and great grands. Thanks for visiting Roy.
