Dodgers Faced Adversity
ADVERSITY: Difficult or unfavorable situation. For today’s Ultimate Blog Challenge this is the suggested topic to write about. I had a few ideas in mind but after watching Game One of the MLB National League Championship Series I decided to write about how the LA Dodgers faced adversity during the game.
The MLB National League Championship Series had their first game on Saturday October 14, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs at Dodgers Stadium. During the 7th inning of the game LA Dodger player Culberson, tried to score while running to home base and while the catcher from the Cubs was waiting to catch the ball, he stretched his left leg over home plate to block the runner. The runner couldn’t get around the catcher’s leg to tag home. The umpire called him out but the Dodger manager protested the call because he felt the Chicago Cubs catcher blocked the plate. The umpires sent the call to the commissioners in New York and after a video review of the play, New York agreed with the Dodgers that the Cubs catcher did in fact illegally block the plate since the Cubs catcher Contreras was in violation of blocking home plate without the ball in his hand. The runner was called safe, the call was reversed and the run counted. Of course the Cubs manager didn’t agree with the reversal and stormed the field but was ejected after he had a not so nice discussion with the umpires and staff.
According to the Official MLB Rules Book #7.06 The Runner…. When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal “Obstruction.” The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.
While this reversal didn’t affect the final score of the game, the Dodgers won 5-2, but it did turn an unfavorable situation around. There are many ways that people deal with adversity which is a difficult or unfavorable situation and the LA Dodgers did what they had to do.
My hubby has been a Dodger fan for over 70 years and win or lose, it’s Dodger’s Blue!
Last year I wrote about this same topic but it was how I turned the difficult situation around after Hurricane Matthew went through our area. This is how I handle my adversity after this happened: http://themarthareview.com/faced-with-adversity/
Have you been faced with adversity and how did you handle it?

Very interesting story! To be honest, I almost held my breath a bit, wondering how it turned out. Glad to hear it worked out in the end. To me, that is more important than whether or not they won the game.
While the outcome of this play didn’t affect the score, the Dodgers would have won either way, I too am glad the call was reversed as the rules say. It’s more important to follow the rules in whatever it is we do. Thanks for stopping by!
