DIY Gift Basket

Last week Lia and I were baking Easter cookies for our neighbor but I wasn’t able to get to the store for a basket because of the coronavirus stay home order. Instead of just putting the cookies on a plate I came up with another idea for a DIY gift basket. Since I save just about every container, box and packaging insert I knew I could find something.

I started looking through metal containers, plastic storage containers, gift bags and everything else I had. Nothing seems to say, “use me” until I noticed my stack of strawberry baskets. (The ones that hubby always says we don’t need to save these. LOL) So that was the start of our gift basket project.

Next I looked through wrapping paper and tissue paper, none seemed to be the right one. Then I came up with the idea of using fabric to cover the basket! Yes fabric would be great! After measuring from the outside of the basket to the inside and across the bottom then back up and over the other side, I cut a square of fabric 4″ bigger than the measurement then put the fabric in the bottom of the basket and draped it over the sides. I found some ribbon in my craft cupboard and wrapped it around the basket, tying it in a small bow. After tying the ribbon on, I trimmed the fabric at the corners to give it a rounded look.

Supplies Needed for Gift Basket

Box or some other kind of container Piece of scrap fabric or tissue paper Decorative ribbon or yarn

We filled our DIY gift basket with 2 packages of delicious cookies that Lia made, some colorful twizzler sticks and a few pieces of candy. Since we didn’t get a chance to go shopping for Easter candy, we filled it with what we had. I think it turned out great and our neighbor love it. http://themarthareview.com/missing-our-neighbor-part-2/

It’s as simple as that to make a beautiful DIY gift basket! Whether you need a basket for a special occasion, teachers gifts, or just a basket to cheer someone up, this is a great project. Of course after I finished this I realized I have lots of other containers to add to my collection… all the little plastic pots that our vegetable plants came in that we planted in the garden. Those will be perfect to cover and use as cookie baskets when Lia delivers her cookies to the neighbors! That will be our next DIY project!

Thanks Kat, I enjoy coming up with ways to save items from the landfill. As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
