Different Colored Dragonflies

Today’s topic for the Cornerstone Content Blog Challenge is something that feels different. These don’t actually feel different by they are different colored dragonflies that I haven’t seen in our yard before.

I remember when I was younger we had dragonflies around our yard but we called them “darning needles.” I love the brilliant, iridescent colors of their wings and they seem to hovering when flying. It’s hard to capture pictures of them because they never seem to stay still for very long.

I was surprised the other day when I saw this gold/copper colored dragonfly hovering around our garden. I was lucky enough to snap a few fairly good photographs of him. This was a totally different colorway that I’ve seen.

When I first saw this iridescent blue dragonfly I was excited to see I got such a clear photo of him. But after looking at the photo I realized the dragonfly had more of a green head. He perched on the rose bush long enough for me to get a full face shot. Look how big their eyes are!

This is the same blue dragonfly but I was able to get this totally different angle for the photograph. It looks like he is praying!

Have you ever seen a teeny tiny dragonfly? Lia and I were outside and while she was checking out the garden. I hear her call me and said, Mama comere (that’s how Lia says come here) look at the tiny dragonfly!” I rushed over and looked on and around the plant and told Lia I didn’t see it. “Right here” Lia said. I looked again just as the tiny dragonfly landed on Lia hand for a split second! Even though they aren’t the clearest I was able to snap a few photos of the little dragonfly!

Everytime Lia is in the yard she looks for dragonflies, maybe I should tell her they are darning needles and see what she says! The dragonflies don’t feel different but their colors are so different from the ones I’ve seen in our yard.

  3. We called them dining needles, because we were told they bite us.

Love the pics you captured. Amazing how you managed to get such cool shots.. When I do see them, I am never close enough to a camera or to the dragonflies 🙂
