Dad’s Bible
My mom met my dad while he was home on leave from the Army in 1943, they fell in love and were married while he was still serving our country during World War II.
In 1944 when my dad was in Germany, my mom sent him a little bible of the New Testament. The bible is about 3″ x 4″, it has a leather cover, with the front being metal. The soldiers in World War II carried a bible in their top left pocket over their heart.
The inscription on the metal cover is
“May the Lord be with you” but it’s whats on the first page of the inside cover that makes this bible so special. My mom wrote dad a love note and asked God to protect him and let him come home safely.
I’ve had this bible many years and I still carry it with me when we go to Mass, knowing I have a piece of my mom and dad with me. There is a small piece of paper that has been in the bible so I’m assuming one of the verses meant something to my dad or maybe my mom marked it before she sent it to him. It’s marked on St. John, Chapter 17. I read all the verses and found one that had meaning.
Verse 15 says,
“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” God did watch over and protect my dad as he came home when the war ended.
This is just another small piece of family history that I will pass down so it can stay in the family through many more generations.
