Change in Life

The other day I was going through some thoughts about change in life.  When I look at a picture or see a quote, things that have changed pop in my head.  The biggest and best change is when I met my sweetheart way back on Christmas Day 1965.  We were married on July 29, 1967 shortly after I graduated from high school, that’s over 51 years ago and we’re still going strong.

Another change in life was in 1994 when we made the decision to relocated our interior decorating business from a small town in upstate New York to Myrtle Beach South Carolina area.  My parents had retired in the early 1970’s and made Myrtle Beach their new home.  When my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease we knew it was time to move closer so we could help my dad care for my mom.   While it was a big change, we didn’t give it a second thought, we sold our house, packed up and moved on down.   We were lucky to find a store front for our interior decorating business within a few miles from where we lived and it was fun to bring my mom to work with us.  I remember when I gave her a green and white striped fabric and told her I needed it cut into just green stripes.  Her cutting was so perfect and she was excited to be helping us.  When my dad saw what mom was “making” he smiled and knew she wasn’t really helping with a project but it made her feel so important.

Having children was a change in life but when the grand children started to arrive, it was a totally different feeling.  We have two daughters and 7 grandchildren but when the grandchildren were born and growing up, I never thought about the next generation.

The most exciting change in life is to see our grandchildren having children of their own.  We have 5 beautiful great-grandchildren ages 10 years to 2 months and the exciting news is we will be welcoming two more in the early part of next year!

One change that happened in 2015 started out as an exciting change in life when our 19-year-old granddaughter moved back home with us.  She met a wonderful friend while working at Petco and they were destined to be together.  Unfortunately she had to go back to Ohio temporarily and in 2016 while up there, she was diagnosed with a tumor in her chest wall that had infiltrated into her spinal cord.  Luckily she had the best surgeons at Cleveland Clinic and her two back to back surgeries lasted almost 12 hours.  http://themarthareview.com/finally-time-for-alexandras-surgery/   It’s hard to believe we were traveling up to Ohio this time two years ago for her surgery and a year ago about this same time she was traveling back to South Carolina.  Her wonderful friend whom she met in 2015 was as excited for her to move back as we were.

The biggest change in life for both Alexandra, Stevie and us was the birth of their daughter this past August.  Lia Faith was born into a family full of love, ambition and dreams with a tiny Angel in heaven that will always be looking down and guiding her.

We have to make the best out of changes whether positive or negative and I think for the most, we have accomplished that.  As hubby and I closed the doors of our 53-year-old interior decorating business we are excited to open a new door with our Minky blankets.  I’m thinking this business probably won’t have the life span as our decorating but it will be exciting just the same.

In July I was facing another change in life when I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and did a total make over with my eating habits. Cutting out sweets, added sugar including my sweet tea was the biggest change but I cut them out cold turkey and didn’t have any problem switching over to healthy foods!  These are some of the delicious meals I’ve been preparing since on my healthy eating plan. http://themarthareview.com/fatty-liver-healthy-eating/  Losing weight wasn’t a requirement but I did lose about 18 pounds. It’s been almost four months I feel so much healthier and looking forward to getting my lab reports next week.

These were some of the change in life events that stick in my mind and as we go forward to our next chapter, I’m sure I can add more things for the next Ultimate Blog Challenge.
