Celebrating their 73rd Wedding Anniversary

Celebrating their 73rd Wedding Anniversary

Today my beautiful mom and handsome dad are celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary.

While my dad was home on leave from the Army, he met my mom. They had a whirl wind romance and on October 16, 1943 they married in Tennessee.  The newlyweds had a short honeymoon as my dad went back to protect and fight for our country during World War II.

My mom wrote a beautiful message in a metal jacketed bible and sent it to my dad.  While he carried it with him throughout is tour of duty, he always had a part of mom with him.  I still have this bible and carry it to Mass with me.

When the war was over, thankfully dad came home and they started a family. My older sister was born in 1946 then I came around in 1949. Our grandparents also lived with us and  our happy little family was complete. This is a picture of my mom’s dad with my sister and me.

Or was it?

Ten days after their 15th anniversary, on October 26, 1958, my little sister entered the world. Now our family was complete! What great parents we had while we were growing up. We may not have had a lot of material things but they were loving, caring, kind and always there to encourage their daughters.

Mom passed away in 2000 and dad missed her so much. In 2006 dad went home to be with his love once again.  This is a plaque I made with an Angel in the memory garden in our yard.
I may not see them but I know they are still with us because of all the memories in my heart.

As I gaze towards the heavens, I smile because mom and dad are together once again, forever and ever.
I know they are having a wonderful 73rd wedding anniversary in heaven surrounded with their love for each other.

Happy 73rd Anniversary mom and dad, I love and miss you so much.

EDIT:  This is a comment my little sister left but wanted to share it with my readers.  Our mom and dad were not only role models to their three children, but to so many others as well.  Many “kids” that we grew up with way back when still today remember the memories of mom and dad.

Comment by my little sister:

I remember what dad would always tell people when they mentioned that he had no sons to carry on his name.

He told them that he didn’t want to raise any “cannon fodder” – food for the cannons.

He was a WWII vet who drove ambulances during the liberation of France and he saw more than his share of boys who ended up as food for the cannons.

He never wanted any of his children to find themselves in that position!! So I still use his name, at least on social media, so that he will never be forgotten.

Love you Ma and Dad – thanks for being the excellent role models that you both were to the three of us and so many more!!

Thanks Savvy Age. My mom loved flowers so we made a small memorial garden in our back yard. I’ve always loved the saying I painted on the plaque. Thanks for stopping by.
