Candied Sweet Potatoes

I love candied sweet potatoes and usually go the easy route and get a can of sweet potatoes then add brown sugar, butter and marshmallows to them before I bake them. But today I tried something new! I had purchased sweet potatoes and decided to experiment on a recipe before Thanksgiving.

I took one sweet potato, removed the skin and cut in cubes. I microwaved them for about 3 minutes to partially cook them. Next I added about 2 tablespoons of butter, sprinkled brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg over the top of the potatoes.

Since the potatoes were already half cooked, I put the dish in the toaster oven for about 15 minutes on 450 degrees to melt the butter and brown sugar and let it brown.

The finished candied sweet potatoes were DELICIOUS! I plan to make this for Thanksgiving but will use more than my one trial potato! I don’t think I will microwave them, instead just peel and cut, add to a baking dish with the butter brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and mix together. I plan to bake them at 350 degrees and once the potatoes are tender maybe up the oven to 450 degrees if they need browned a bit more.

My today’s recipe for candied sweet potatoes hit the spot and can’t wait to make them again on Thanksgiving.

I LOVE sweet potatoes Heidi! When I had liver problems I had to stop white bread, rice and potatoes. It wasn’t hard to do since I love sweet potatoes more!

Sounds delicious! Like it would really form a crusty candy-like topping. I prefer baked sweet potatoes because it really makes the sweetness come out!

Yes, it’s almost candy like! I didn’t bake as long as I should have to make it crusty but it was delicious! I usually bake our sweet potatoes but wanted to give this a try. Thanks Laurie!

  4. Martha, these sound great! I must try these soon! Friends are taking me out to eat for Thanksgiving, so I can work baked sweet potatoes into my schedule at my leisure. Thanks for sharing your experiment!

I love sweet potatoes Kebba and this can be made with a few or a lot of potatoes. One sweet potato with the topping can be a filling meal by itself.

  5. Sounds and looks yummy! I add marshmallows on top of my mine and make it more of a souffle, but boy does that soud delicious. When I have that in my meal, I save it for last, like it’s dessert. 🙂
