Best Way to Freeze Cabbage

I love cabbage and my favorite way to prepare it is fried with bacon. Last year a wrote a post about how to freeze cabbage and I had two ways I did it. First I cut the head in half and froze it whole. When I was ready to cook up my meal, I let it thaw out, cut in slices and fried it up. It was okay but I had to dry it with a paper towel since it was quite watery. Then the next time I prepared my meal, I sliced and cooked it frozen. That was so much better as it wasn’t water soaked. I was happy when the Frozen Cabbage Verdict is In. But since I started freezing it, I have now come up with best way to freeze cabbage and it’s quick, easy and delicious!

My newest way to freeze cabbage for cooking is by far the best. First I pull off the outer leaves and cut the bottom flat. I then cut a “V” around the core and remove that. Next I slice the head of cabbage into four or five thick slices depending on how large the cabbage head is. Take those slices and cut in narrow slices so it has a chopped look. I then cut the lengths in half.

I don’t blanche the cabbage, I just put in a freezer bag, date it and put in the freezer. I put enough for a meal in each bag so you will need to decide how much you need per meal. Once it begins to freeze, I shake the bag about every 15 – 20 minutes to keep from freezing in a clump. Once it’s frozen it will stay separated while in the freezer.

When I’m ready to make my fried cabbage and bacon I cut the bacon in small pieces and fry it up. After the bacon is browned, I take a bag of the cabbage out of the freezer and toss the frozen cabbage in the pan with the bacon, leaving the bacon grease in the pan. Cooking it frozen keeps it from getting mushy like it did when I froze the cabbage without cutting in slices.

Since I came up with this new and improved best way to freeze cabbage, my previous post for frozen cabbage is out dated and I will recommend this for the best tasting fried cabbage and bacon using frozen cabbage. This is my recipe for fried cabbage and bacon meal, I love it! http://themarthareview.com/fried-cabbage-with-bacon/

Do you like cabbage and have you frozen it before? This is another great way to save money by purchasing cabbage when it’s on sale. I just bought a large head for 44 cent per pound and shredded enough for two large bowls of coleslaw and three bags chopped for the freezer for my cabbage and bacon meals. It’s a quick and easy way to make dinner!

  1. I have never frozen cabbage. I buy just enough for my application- either conventional cole slaw or apple slaw.
And, of course, it would NEVER be mixed with bacon!

I have not frozen cabbage before.. normally use it up in two uses for different purposes. And yes, while I would not count it as a favorite, we do enjoy cabbage

Since I’m the only one thata eats cabbage, it’s easier for me to get a large head and freeze it in individual cooking packages Vidya. That way I have it when I get my cabbage craving!

  3. I learned something new today! I like to use cabbage for different recipes, but then have unused portion that goes bad. Now I know what to do. 🙂

Martha, I love all that you do with cabbage. I like it and the rest of my family doesn’t. Add some cheese and they will eat it.

  5. That skillet of cabbage & bacon looks yummy! And it sounds like you have hit upon the right solution for how to freeze the cabbage. I think you’ve come up with another meal idea I want to try, too!
