Before Hurricane Matthew Hit South Carolina

Before Hurricane Matthew Hit South Carolina

Hurricane Matthew was making his way up the eastern coast and he wibble wabbled his track as he approached Florida.  The forecast tracks had it coming up to Georgia/South Carolina border and then making an abrupt right turn out to sea. We listened to the news briefing from our South Carolina Governor and she advised residents to be ready for evacuation.  We have never evacuated but this time hubby and I decided to head west to check out the changing of the leaves before Hurricane Matthew hit South Carolina.

I packed a few essentials, one being my  E.L.F  cleanser and moisturizer  with the other a bag packed with a loaf of bread, jar of peanut butter and two boxes of Italian cookies.  I had to make sure we had our priorities. LOL  We left about 3:00 PM Friday and went about 2 hours west where we stayed for the night.  When Friday evening came, the hurricane hugged the coast and now the forecast was to come up to the South Carolina/North Carolina border before turning out.  What a surprise when we woke up Saturday morning to torrential rains and high winds and the hurricane was still in Georgia.   We had two options, stay there and worry about our home and business or head home before Hurricane Matthew hit South Carolina.

A two hour drive to get there, took us four hours to get back home.  So many of the roads were flooded and we had to make detours.  The top photo is not a lake, it is a farmer’s field! We have a full-sized pickup truck and if we could see the lines in the road, we would carefully drive through.

As we approached a flooded road, we could see the lines but then it’s like they dropped off like when you see the bottom of the ocean then it drops off to not sure how deep it is.  We stopped at the edge of the water and noticed something in the water, it looked like a car that had noise dived.  Hubby started waking out in knee-deep water and thankfully it was only a piece of farm machinery that had been swept into the road.  We didn’t even attempt to cross this one as did the truck on the other side of the water.

Detour after detour, driving over a wooden bridge with the creek overflowing on the road when hubby mentions that  the road could wash out any time. I told him to hurry to the other side.  The wind was horrendous, pushing our truck side to side and the rain was coming down so hard the wipers couldn’t even keep up.

We made it home and while it was raining, it was nothing like what we had just been through.  We drove down to our shop to check things out, then over to the ocean for a sneak peek of the pre-hurricane waves.   They were about 20 feet and the hurricane was now at the Georgia/South Carolina border.   We made it back home to sit and wait out Hurricane Matthew.   That will be another chapter in my Hurricane Matthew blog.

  1. WOW – talk about an adventure. I would have been doing you-know-what in my pants. No messing with Mother Nature. What a force!

I absolutely LOVE you emergency kit… rofl. Skin cream, bread, peanut butter and cookies… Did you think you were going on a little picnic and wanted to look pretty too? lol That cracked me up.

LOL it does sound like a picnic now that you mention it Jane! What started out as just a nice drive to get away from Mother Nature certainly didn’t end up like a picnic in the park. Plus we didn’t bring our boots, lesson learned, throw them in the back of the truck whether we think we will need them or not! Hubby and I are very adventurous without trying. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, so glad you are safe. Can’t wait to hear more on your experience with Matthew!

    • Martha says:

Thanks Jennifer, thinking back now that we are home safe, it was probably a bit unsafe but hubby and I are two old coots and a bit off our rockers at times! LOL There will be a few more chapters coming soon!

God! I am glad you are back safe and sound. Nothing works in front of mother nature’s wrath. I was once stuck in a flood I had just shifted. Did not know the language,no friends and thinking of it now,it was like an adventure. I like your emergency kit. 😛

I think floods are the scariest, they can come up in a flash without warning. I can’t imagine how your felt not being able to communicate will, glad all worked out fine. I needed to take the Italian cookies, they are my favorite! LOL Thanks for stopping by Ramya.

Very scary! I am glad you both made it through that hurricane.

  5. Sandy KS says:

You are very blessed to be able to drive through all that and survive. I am glad nothing bad happened.

    • Martha says:

Yes, I feel like God was leading us through. There were a few where we couldn’t see the yellow lines on the road so if we don’t see lines, we don’t go through. Hopefully we won’t have to do this any time soon in the near future. Thanks for visiting Sandy.
