Beautiful Wildflowers

Guess what??? It’s another Friday Story Time by Lia and today I’m sharing some beautiful wildflowers Ma and I saw on our hike along the Mohawk River while we were visiting Schenectady New York! I took these pictures myself with Ma’s Google Pixel 6 phone. After I take a picture I click the “Lens” button and it will do a search and tell me what kind of flowers they are!

This was the first flower we saw and yellow is my favorite color! These are called Trefoil and some were all yellow and the others were yellow with orange.

I was even able to get a picture of the Trefoil flower with a little butterfly on the petals! After I clicked on the phone “Lens” button, it brought up pictures of a White-Spotted Sable Moth. Ma and I think it looks like that’s what this is. While I was searching, I found out National Moth Week was July 23-31, 2022 and we spotted this one on July 27th!

When I saw these beautiful flowers I told Ma they looked like lace. It’s no wonder this wild flower is named Queen Anne’s Lace! Ma told me when she was a little girl, the field next to her houe was filled with these flowers which are also known as wild carrots or bishop’s lace!

There were so many Sumac bushes along the river path. When I clicked on “Lens” it brought up the Staghorn Sumac. There are many different sumac types and some are poisonous like poison ivy but the Staghorn Sumac is not poisonous and you can even eat the berries! The red berries are edible and the white berries are found on poisonous Sumac so don’t touch those!

Another yellow flower and this one is called Goldenrod. Did you know that Goldenrod does not cause allergies as many people think it does? Goldenrod is pollinated by insects so there is no pollen flying around like the wind-pollinated plants. You might see the small purple flowers mixed in with the Goldenrod, my next picture is a close-up of them!

Purple is mommy’s favorite color and this flowering plant is Knapweed. There are many different varities of Knapweed and when researching it from Google “Lens” it brought up Meadow Knapweed and Spotted Knapweed. Both look so much alike so I’m calling this just Knapweed!

Ma and I had such a great time hiking along the Mohawk River and seeing so many beautiful wild flowers. We hope the varieties of each are correct from what Google “Lens” showed me. Ma told me she would see all these flowers in the fields where she lived in upstate New York when she was a little girl so it brought back memories of when she was little like me.

I hope you enjoyed your hike with me and seeing all the beautiful wildflowers on Friday Story Time by Lia. I’ll be back for another exciting story next week.
