Appearance
Today I am talking about appearance, no not in you and me but in blogs. I have a WordPress self hosted blog and it does automatic updates. I check out the newly added blog items when it updates and continue on my writing.
But last week my blogger friend and host of the Ultimate Blog Challenge posted about efficient ways to customize your blogs appearance! I had no idea what I could change until I followed Paul’s instructions!
One of the topics he discussed was changing the background color. I’ve had my blog for over six years and always had the white background. After reading about changing the background color I was excited to try it!
First I clicked on Appearance and then Customize. I scrolled down the list until I found Website Background and I clicked on that. This brought up a color block where I can experiment and change the background color.
I played around with the different colors and as long as you don’t click “publish” nothing will change on your blog. I tried a blue background but I didn’t like the contrast against my photographs. When I added a yellow background I loved the way it popped and framed my photographs.
Scrolling back to the top of the same list is General Options. This is were you can change basic text and link color. When I share a link, I highlight it and it shows up blue. I learned that I have the option of changing that on this tab also.
I have so much more to investigate since reading Paul’s blog and I’m so glad he posted this knowledgeable blog. I have the Falive theme but I want to check out other themes and fonts. This is definitely a blog to bookmark! Thank you Paul for sharing your great learning tips. There is so much more on Paul’s blog to learn about customizing your blog and you can read it here: https://digitalmaestro.com/efficient-ways-to-customize-your-blogs-appearance-part-ii/
My blog is white as well, although I’m not sure I can change it. Off to perhaps learn a new skill – thanks!
I had no idea about changing the background and font styles Suzanne! It’s exciting when I learn new things.
Hi Martha, the step-by-step is appreciated. Some of us (like myself) need it lol. I agree – it does “POP” with the yellow color. It allows for easier reading as well. I will have to check this out for my blog as well.
I’m glad you enjoyed the step by step Wyn. I need to see things to get it to sink in at times. LOL I like the yellow also, have fun checking yours out.
You know, Martha, every time I read Paul Taubman’s blog posts I get globs of wisdom to enhance my online marketing journey. Although my blog page is colorful, the background is white. After reading your article, I’m motivated to go and play around with the background color. Thanks for posting.
Yes Paul is a wealth of knowledge Florence! I would have never thought of changing the background color if I didn’t read his blog. That’s why I love to read others blogs!

I love to play around with my blog’s appearance! It’s fun, isn’t it? It’s neat to see your blog making changes.
I didn’t even know I could do that Jeanine! I love learning new things from other bloggers.
HI Martha, thank you so much for the reminder on this. I had meant to change mine and completely forgot. This was fun changing colors and seeing how it looked. If you have a few, please check out my site and let me know what you think? Is it easy or hard on the eyes, etc? Thanks in advance and for sharing this helpful hint.
Glad my blog reminded you Samantha! I checked yours out and I like the softness of the color, something about white now is boring. LOL
Martha, yes! It’s so much fun to play around with the appearance of our blogsite! And I like your yellow background. Yes, Paul is totally awesome! I will share your post.
Now I want to check out my other appearance options Kebba! I’m glad you like the yellow, I tried a few colors but found I liked the yellow the best. I’ve learned so much for Paul and other bloggers, love it!
I’m still using blogspot, and the options for changing my blog’s appearance are somewhat limited. One of these days, I’m going to switch over to a self-hosted blog. It would be nice to have better control over the blog’s appearance without having the urge to pull out my hair!!!
I never realized how much control I have since switching to self-hosted Alice. I’m an Amazon affiliate so that pays for my blog!
love this.. i go play with the appearance every once in a while but it has been too long since i did it…
and Lia always makes me smile
This is the first time I’ve played with my appearance Vidya, so much fun! I’m happy Lia makes you smile.
Great post.
Thanks Amanda, I like learning new things.
