Adversity Update
We are halfway through the Ultimate Blog Challenge and the topic is to write about a time our business faced adversity. I’m actually going to write an adversity update from a blog I wrote in 2018. When adversity visited us, we had to come up with a plan. We made the decision to close our retail shop but that doesn’t mean we are “retired”. This is the blog I wrote in October 2018. http://themarthareview.com/how-to-handle-adversity/
After we closed our retail shop we opened a new business, Mama’s Minkys where we design and create baby blankets made from super soft Minky fabric. Lia became our Quality Control Inspector and she now helps with the sewing and her mom works on locating the perfect fabrics!
Well the baby Minky blankets kept us busy but then we had people ask about children sizes and even adult sized blankets. So once again our new business grow from word of mouth. https://www.facebook.com/MamasMinkys/
But that’s not all that changed. Yes we “retired” from our interior decorating shop but kept our workroom. We would create in a drapery now and then but the phone would ring and another order was on the way. So after 53 years in business we closed our shop only to open Mama’s Minkys and then get busy again with our drapery orders. Creating window treatments is in my blood and I think I will be like my grandmother and be sewing up to the end.
Love Minky Martha, is there anything softer? Good for you for staying vibrant and doing what you love!
I’m so glad I found Minky fabric for Lia’s first blanket Cindy. Now even Rusty has his own Minky blanket and it has little puppies on it!
Martha, you are so awesome! Always taking positive steps. And I do wonder, with Martha’s Minkeys, if you are actually touching more lives and comforting more people?
Thank you Kebba, I like being positive. I’ve actually made many Minky blankets as gifts, one was for a client from back in the 80’s who became a dear friend. She had a major stroke so I made one as a leg cover while in her wheel chair with Peppe Pig since she loves pigs.
Awesome! I remember seeing some of those blankets (or maybe they were similar ones!)
Adversity is really how you handle the circumstances you find yourself immersed in! It can be terrible or it can be seen as an opportunity. You can find yourself in the biggest Pity Party, or looking at a great opportunity!
Thanks for sharing!
I figure there is no sense in complaining, it won’t get us anywhere. I’m like the “don’t cry over spilled milk” type. Thanks for visiting Paul.
Those blankets are beautiful! I love the way your new business has expanded.
It has expanded all on it’s own Jeanine and word of mouth. The best type of advertising.
What cute blankets.
Thanks Amanda, I love created them and making smiles!
