A to Z Food Challenge – H

What does Ham, Hazelnuts and Hibiscus have in common? They all work for the A to Z Challenge – H. You might wonder why I added Hibiscus which is a flower to the Food Challenge but just wait!

When I bake a ham I have many meals from it. The main meal is ham with scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes and green bean casserole. Any leftover ham I cut off the bone and store in portion containers for leftover meals.

These are two left over meals from a baked ham. The first picture is my Hawaiian meal with chunks of ham, pineapple and covered with brown sugar. As the heats up, the sugar melts and the juice from the pineapple goes through the ham and it’s so delicious. The other meal is all leftovers. I fried up some potatoes and added cheese to the ham. When it heated up the cheese melted giving the ham a delicious flavor.

We might have cold ham sandwiches or fried ham and eggs. Hubby doesn’t like cheese so I add ham, cheese and tomatoes to my omelette. This is a great meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

This is one of my favorite meals to use leftovers. I cut the ham in small pieces and use that instead of bacon with my fried cabbage. But this time I added eggs and cheese to the mix with my fried ham and cabbage.

I don’t let any of the ham go to waste, I take the bone and make split pea soup! When the soup is done, I remove the bone, let it cool and take over to my neighbor’s dog!

I love most all kinds of nuts and when making biscotti I searched every store from Hazelnuts and finally found them at Fresh Market. I chop them up and add to a variety of my recipes.

Did you know you can make delicious hot or cold tea from Hibiscus flowers? You can purchase dried flowers or if you have Hibiscus plants you can dry your own and make a delicious pot of tea. This is a great site with directions. https://www.ohhowcivilized.com/hibiscus-tea/

Our A to Z Food Challenge – H starts with ham and goes to nuts and flowers for tea! What is your favorite H food?

Here In Mexico Hibiscus, iced tea is one of the two most popular agua fresca tied with Tamarind followed in third place is watermelon or Agua Sandia. The kids love the Sandia. We have the first two in our house often as well as Starfruit water which is a favorite of company. We do have our own fruit and trees because of the hot weather. Sorry about the ham but on my Blue zone lifestyle that is way more meat than we could eat in six months. I have roasted a ham a while back but with the intent of serving any leftovers to my doggies (they loved it)

  2. Obviously not a meal for me.
