When Widgets Cover Blog Content

When Widgets Cover Blog Content

When participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge I usually write my blogs the evening before and schedule them to be published the following morning.  I set the time then preview my blog to make sure everything is the way I want it.  The next morning, after it’s published, I check again but usually on my phone.  Well I learned something the other day when a UBC participant messaged me saying the banner ads and widgets that are on the right side of my blog were over top of my blog content, making it difficult to read.  So I had to figure out what to do when widgets cover blog content.

Since I was on my computer I checked it out immediately and realized when viewing on a phone it’s totally different from computer.  Everything was fine on the phone but no so on my laptop.  So I went to the edit mode and everything looked fine.  I then thought maybe it had something to do with the photo so I removed that but the ads where still over the content.  I always like to try to figure something out when I have a problem, whether it be on the computer, the Harley’s, vehicles and even at work.  But I was baffled on what was causing this problem. I even went back to all black lettering but that did nothing.  I went back to my previous blogs and all of them were fine so I was at a loss. I hate to say I’m giving up but I couldn’t think of anything more to do.

My next step was to decide on whether I should call WordPress or Host Gator, all while still scratching my head saying I’m going to look around one more time.  Now when I was previously checking my blog, I was on Visual mode.  I’m not sure what little person in my head told me to check the Text mode but that’s what I did.  I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!!   I’m not sure how it happened, but I had extra links about the title that didn’t make any sense to me.  As I read the links I realized it was part of a quote I was going to use but changed my mind.  I had deleted it from the Visual mode so not sure why it stayed in the Text mode.  So now I had a dilemma…. do I remove the characters that I don’t think belong and possibly remove something wrong and make my blog go poof?  I decided the blog wasn’t good they way it was so I closed my eyes and deleted it! (I didn’t really close my eyes but I held my breath!  LOL)

After deleting it I went back to the Visual mode but realized I wouldn’t be able to tell until I updated the info.  Now once again I’m scratching my head, what if it didn’t work and when I update the blog is gone? Then I remembered I can preview the changes before I update!  So I clicked preview and everything was the way it was supposed to be!  WOO HOO, I did it, I was persistent and it paid off!

I updated the blog and I checked again and YES IT WAS FIXED!!   But then second guessing my persistence and wondered if it was just fixed on my end, I messaged the one that originally messaged me and he replied with “it’s fixed now”!!

So now I have decided to check on my laptop before I head to work to make sure no gremlins mess up the ad placement.  I love to try to come up with a solution to a problem and this one actually took about 45 minutes to diagnose and repair the problem.  Now if this happens again, I will know to check out the Text mode immediately!  Thanks to Roy who has such an interesting blog, https://www.adjuvancy.com/wordpress/ for contacting me about this “goof up” and testing it when I found the culprit that caused the problem.  I love be persistent when problems arise and when widgets cover blog content again, I will have an idea what the problem is.

I knew Roy is a good man, and this really proves it. Reading this also makes me wonder what would happen if anything ever happened to my Blogger blog. I’ve stayed with Blogger because of convenience but, if something happened, I would also have limited options. (I still value the convenience too much, though!)

Thank you for this. I have seen this happen before.

  3. Just trying to be helpful. What’s the point of having great content if folks can’t read it?

I love WordPress Alana, when I started my blog I didn’t have a clue on what to do but I haven’t had any problems setting things up with WP. There has been only one time when I had to call support from Host Gator regarding my site but that was partly human error. LOL Thanks for stopping by.

I actually had it happen I think last year but once I resized my page it corrected it. This time was definitely content on the text mode that wasn’t suppose to be there. I’m glad I was able to scoop out things and find it on my own.

That’s what I like about bloggers, everyone is ready to help others! Now if the world could be like bloggers, we’d live in a happy place 🙂 Thanks again Roy!

    Hey Martha
Well done! You found the problem, and the gremlins 🙂
Wordpress can be tricky at times, however, you can normally find the problem when viewing in text mode. Yay!! Good for you to find the solution as quickly as you did. I loved the fact that you wrote about your challenge and the correction you made to your blog to solve the problem. Very helpful for others too 🙂

  8. Martha, what an interesting technical problem you’ve dealt with! Roy is definitely a knowledgeable and wonderful man. I am learning to design my own website– hopefully coming by January–and I learned in classes that the WordPress theme (design template) one is using may not be “mobile responsive”, readable from screens large and small. We of course need templates that are mobile responsive, because something like 2/3 of blog readers are reading us from their mobile phones. I am not familiar with your Prototitan system, but something to consider for future. I personally love WordPress. Thanks for sharing your experience today.

  9. I’m so glad you were able to resolve it!! I have noticed that happening before, when the share thing covers posts, on other blogs. Sometimes, there’s a way to minimize it but not always. Never realized it could be a glitch they are experiencing, like it was for you.

Thanks Tracy, I usually give things a try before I cry for help. I like to post both good and bad so if someone else has the same problem, they can see how to correct it. I’m a persistent one! LOL Thanks for visiting.

I like to try to work out problems on my own Kebba, I learn as I go along. If it wasn’t for Roy messaging me about the overlap, I wouldn’t have know since I was at work. When I check my blog on my phone, the ads are at the end of the blog instead of on the side. I am very happy with WordPress even though I was told it was hard to start out on. Since I never had a blog to compare it to, I found it very user friendly. Thanks for stopping by.

I’ve seen it before also Jeanine, including a few times on my own blog. Once I resize it was okay, but know that I know to check in the text mode, I will do that to make sure everything is where it’s suppose to be. I love learning things on my own without having to call tech and usually I can figure it out. My brain is still working! LOL Thanks for visting!
